Lamp Dimmer

Looks like it only has three settings (off, low bright and high bright) and might not give you the fine control that you need to adjust temps.

On the other hand it's pretty cheap and might be worth a try, just in case. Check the UTH watts/volts to make sure it matches.

I think you are taking a chance with that dimmer.
I suggest going to your local hardware store and picking up a dimmer there- then you can compare and play around with different ones. They are cheap there as well (~$6) and you know what you are getting.

I had a dimmer once that would not go low enough, I stuck the UTH to a ceramic tile and placed the tile under the tank, and that brought the temp down to the acceptable range (with the dimmer)

just an idea of making something that doesnt go low enough work out

Kind of a dumb question about dimmers...do all of them require rewiring things to be set up with an UTH, or is there a dimmer-for-dummies that I can buy instead? I got one from our local hardware store and I'm feeling rather unqualified to be messing around with electrical wiring and whatnot. (Plus, there's other stuff that I plug into that outlet that I don't want "dimmed"!)

I bought a $9 one from our local TruValue...the closest HomeDepot is an hour away *sigh* I guess I could check with the TruValue again but all of them seemed to look the same to me...

Yes, you can get some lamp dimmer switches that are already wired if you don't feel comfortable wiring one up yourself. You just need to plug the dimmer switch into the wall, and then plug the UTH into the dimmer switch. Something like this should work...http://www.lampdimmerswitch.net/ I would assume truvalue should have something like it, maybe even wal mart :shrugs:

Oh, right, Wal-mart! *facepalms* I didn't think to check there, will totally do that tomorrow (after I return the wired one)! Thanks, guys :)
