Large tank issue

In December my husband and I are planning on getting a corn. It will be our first snake, but not the first of our reptile adventures. We currently have a custom built tank that housed our beardie for 9 years who passed a few weeks ago.

This is where my issue comes into play. This tank is enormous. It's 5ft long, 2ft high, and 18in deep. It sits on the custom built cabinet to match and it is the the centerpiece of our living room. All made by my dad. Therefore, I really don't want to get rid of it. I know it it's way to large for a baby corn. We divided it for Lucy when she was a baby and later took it out. I don't have space elsewhere to put a smaller tank safely in the meantime, especially having other animals in our house.

So after my long drawn out explanation, my question is; do I section the tank off at the 3ft mark and put plenty of places to hide, or section it off at the 2ft mark and later expand to 3ft. The remaining 2-3ft will be used as the feed side and we will likely never expand past the 3ft.

I would also like to add that I'm super excited for this next "cold blooded" (as my son likes to say) adventure!

Thank you! [emoji1]

As long as you have plenty of hides, the too large size doesn't really matter. It is only the need to find the snake and save on cleaning and substrate that makes a smaller size better. Do whatever works for you as far as partitioning goes.

My only caveat is making it escape proof. I lost a very dear snake to escape so I say this from sad experience. Corn snakes are little Houdinis.

So sorry for the loss of your beardie. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you, we really loved her, my son was devastated. And that's good to know. We are doing some modifications to the tank, I'm actually taking it over to my dad's in a little while. On the list is checking and double checking all escape routes!

You are definitely around folks here who know that there is no thing as just a snake or just a beardie.

Your plan sounds good. Corns are sweet animals and they do recognize their people. If I had any doubts mine went to the vet yesterday and I could tell I was her security, especially when they returned her to me after her X-ray. She was like, "I'm holding on and not letting go of you!"

I noticed that in the great scheme of things we are practically neighbors, lol. Best wishes and feel free to hang out here. This is a real nice board.

Thank you. I've been kind of just creeping for awhile, a lot of what know about corns came from here. I love reading stories and seeing pictures. I'm happy to join everyone here!

I'd say divide the tank in half and then you can get 2 corn snakes. 😆 That much space could make finding and actually seeing your corn tricky.

I thought about that too, but I've heard that 2.5ft wouldn't be long enough for an adult?

I see now that you said it's 5x1.5, I read it as 5x2. But it could still work, each side would have 540 square inches. A 30 gallon is 432 square inches if it's 36x12. Plus you have 2 feet of vertical space to work with.

I wouldn't mess around with dividers. I would use a terrarium liner and only keep a smaller tub with bedding in it. Plenty of hides and climbing branches and your snake should be easily found in his/her favorite hide most of the time. Sounds like corn snake heaven actually.
