Last Good Herping Session in Nor Cal

No corns to speak of obviously, but some cute snakes, turtles, and amphibians!
This was not too long before I graduated. My herpetology class was let into this private animal preserve out near the Mendicino coast. We camped out for a couple days and did nothing but herp. It was amazing!

It is a type of ring neck snake, Dustilyn. I had not known they came in so many different variations until I started looking around on this site.

Cool pics. What kind of turtle is that? It looks kind of like a wood turtle from the front.

what was the last snake? I love the vivid markings and head shape on it. Really cool looking in my opinion.

Ring neck musk, I know it well. The ring necks I always found were brown and black not vivid like that gray and red guy. You had a good day.

Looks like a lot of fun! Can't wait till it quits snowing here and gets higher then 30F.... I want to go herping....

The last snake was a juvenile racer. The turtle was probably a western pond turtle. Those are really common in the area where we were herping. Lol I can't find my herper's notes anywhere to tell you the exact species (I just recently moved). Yeah it was a wonderful time, let me tell you!

The little racer is too cute!

Looks like you had an amazing trip. Your pictures are making me nostalgic for warmer weather.

Those are some great finds for this early in the year! And you're right about the turtle being a Western Pond - it's the only aquatic turtle native to the state of CA.

What were the lizards in the first pic? And also is it possible to get those ring necks in the pet trade?

The lizards in the first pic are young Western Fence Lizards. Ringneck snakes feed mainly on salamanders and therefore are not popular in the trade. Like many other small snakes (DeKay's, Earth, Worm, etc.) they need a humidity gradient and this is difficult to establish in captivity.
