LED lighting in your homemade enclosure?

I've looked at several stores for LED lights. They are all so expensive. LEDs are not terribly expensive by themselves, though. If we are mounting these somewhat permanently, and usually out of sight, why not make our own lights? We don't need mass-produced, high-overhead, fancy plastic deals.

I've thought about this, true DIY... but i'm not sure the feasibility of it.. how to tell if the LEDs are bright enough...etc. They generally don't throw very far on their own, so we'd have to build them in some sort of reflector to make the light reach further. Aluminum foil is cheap... maybe some sort of thin sheet metal?

Just as a thought... I'm from UK, and you can buy led strips on e'bay uk and have them linked up by clear wire.... does not cost an arm and a leg either... I wanted to have both blue and red lights as part of a viv stack I made from some old storage units I had lying around, and wanted the lights to be part of my evening 'lighting' scheme, as I rarely use overhead lights in the house, just lamps.

Ordered one of each colour. 3 x 1 foot strips, connected by 3 foot of clear wire so could run this between the three viv's I have it in... this is the effect

If you wanted to use the white lights instead of blue and red, sure they would work just as well.

Link for uk site for example... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLUE-TRIPLE-F...yZ109067QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Or if you are a member of Reptiles Forum UK (RFUK) there is a guy on there who does them cheaper called ReptilesInk... I'm sure you should be able to get similar over there though... and can guarantee they only give out minimal heat.

Good luck... J
