Leopard Gecko Help.

BurBit

New member
I went out of town for a week and when I came back my boyfriend surprised me with a new Leopard Gecko.. Only thing is is that I have no idea how to care for a leopard gecko, and I wasn't able to research if they were safe to in the same room as a newborn.

I've been searching the web, and from what I've found Leopard Geckos need a bit higher temperature than cornsnakes, around 88 degrees, which I was planning to achieve with a small UTH. They do not need UV light, but need a 12 hour day and 12 hour night. Last they need some type of humidity to be able to shed correctly, so I saw that you can use different stuff that you keep moist, also the moist stuff needs to be kept in a hid, so that it stays in that one place.

Any tips on what is best to use for humidity?
Any tips on figuring out how old the gecko is? (Boyfriend didn't ask)
Does the water dish need to be big enough for the gecko to bathe in?
Should I just stick to feeding the gecko 3-4 crickets a day?
How do I provide the multi-vitamin, and calcium supplement?

ANY
help is appreciated! Thank you.

"Any tips on what is best to use for humidity?"

A spray bottle maybe? misting the tank daily? or a humid hide, I use humid hides for my snakes very often, some people use moist in them, I user wet tissue paper it works great.

other then that, I'm not really any help lol

sprinkle the vitamin/calcium powder into a ziplock bag, add the crickets, and shake...PRESTO!! instant high vitamin food for ur new leo

i forgot, u can also use mealworms to feedhim.her, but u can stick to the crickets

I can answer a couple more :) I think...... lol

my geckos love to sit in their water dish, not sure about other peoples :shrugs: so I use a flower pot bottom and keep 3/4 full of fresh water :)

as for feeding... there are a few dif things to feed them.. I do give mine just crickets though and they are doing fine... as for 3-4 crickets a day.... no... that is a very small amount of food.... let them eat as many as they want... just make sure to offer it every day and not let crickets stay in the tank over night.... they will bother the geckos sometimes.

for humidity... you can use a humid hide... do a search on here and most snake humid hides work for leos too... just dont be surprised if you see your leo pulling his old skin off and eating it.. mine do that sometimes :)

vitamins and stuff... as meagan said... just had leo powder to the cricket bag, shake and there ya go :) but you only need to do it a few times a week :)

Some leos also really like veggies.... mine like romaine and curly endive.... I offer it a couple times a week :)

Hope that helped abit :)

Could you post a pic? :D Not just so we can look, but maybe take a guess at the age?
I'm feeding my Leos every other day now as they're fat adults and slowing down for the winter. A humid hide (like the ones in other threads for snakes) works perfectly, no additional misting needed. Also keep a small dish of the Calcium powder in the tank, they will lap it up on occasion.

Just because I freaked when I saw this leos eat their shed adn they shed about every two weeks. Mine actually looked like he was chewing his leg off until I realized what it was. good luck

Picture!

Here are a couple quick shots.
