Lighting for a new corn

Ok. I'm still fairly new to corns. But I was just wondering. I live in northern Canada, and the amount of daylight we get up here is different. In the winter daytimes are short and get shorter till about mid January. Where as in the Summer day times are longer. I was just wondering. If in the winter time I have the shades open and my snake is getting the sun and then the sun sets. Should I tunr on a Lamp for my snake? And if so should my snkae be getting a full 12 hours of light? I'm wondering and asking because I want my first snake to be healthy and happy. Any answers you guys can give me I'll be really greatful.
