lighting in vivs

Hi there!
I've sorted out the humiditity problem in my viv, but as always I've found another problem.
I don't have a light in the tank, I 've just got a heat mat. The temp is fine but do I need a light so the snake knows when it's day or night?
At the moment it's eternal darkness in the viv cause it's made out of thick wood and the light from the room isn't really getting in.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Lighting

Rhiannon :)

I happen to have a uva/uvb light for my cage. The bulb is just in a simple strip light, and sits ontop of my screen top. You dont have to have a uva/uvb light, but I happened to get the whole basic setup for free from my boyfriend (he used to have an anole). I would recommend to go to a petstore or somewhere with an aquatics department, and get a strip light. Depending on the size of your viv, they are usually 19.99 and up (19.99 for a ten gallon size strip light). Then you could just get a cheap aquarium bulb if you wanted. If you want to spend more, you could get a uva/uvb bulb, which I dont think would be a bad idea since s/he doesnt get much natural light. I dont think it would hurt :)

As for the not knowing the light or day thing, I am not sure either. I think that no light at all would make it hard for the snake to gauge time of day. But I am not sure. Hope this helps!!

Yup, I had same prob. My old viv was thick wood and my room is quite dark so I was advised to put in a small pygmy bulb. Its only 15 watts so wont make too much diff to your temp gradients but it will shed some light on the situation!
