Lighting?

Ok I have to put my 2 cents in here. I DO use a UV light for Smokey my anery on the recommendation of my vet, I know this isn't traditional but I figured I'd try it, especially after reading in Kathy Love's book that UV light doesn't seem to hurt them and may be beneficial to a sick snake (Smokey regurged in February)

What I have observed since I added the UV light...... Smokey routinely comes out and either lays on the top layer of leaves in his tank or just underneath, typically about a half hour before the light goes off, so he appears to be absorbing the UV light, his activity level has drastically inproved and is the most active corn snake I have had the pleasure of either owning or working with, and his feeding response has gotten absolutely vicious he actually squeezed a pinky so badly the guts burst.

Now I am not saying its for everyone and i now thousands, possibly millions of crons are get successfully for years without the UV light and will continue to do so, but I have noticed a big difference in smokey and will add UV lights for any future snakes I own.

Interesting feedback, thanks for that.

If you ever choose to use UV with the lighter morphs, perhaps you could let us know how that goes?

If Kathy says it won't hurt them I will consider trying it with my Amel. Do you use the UV at night or during the day or??

I don't think that UV is bad... the sun would be bad for them in that case. Which, is ridiculous.

I'm a pretty firm believer that necessary or not, light cycles are important for most all animals health. I use a very small (size and strength) UV light for all of my crabs, as well as the corn snake. The room they are in has AWFUL natural light, so everyone has lights on timers.

Other people are going to tell you different things... and it may work for them. I'm never going to discredit someones husbandry methods that has been very successful--- just a different opinion.
