I have seen and heard that corn snakes can live in shoebox and plastic boxes. (duh the title) well i have a corn snake that's in a 20gallon tank. Is it OK for them to be in there would they feel to squeezed.

(for cornsnakes that are about 3months-1year old)

is this OK..?..?

I keep my snakes in vivs, but one rule of thumb I've heard is that the distance from corner to corner should be greater than one half the length of the snake.

Ok this may sound like the most dumb question but whats a viv.

I'm new at this so I'm not holding back, I want to know as much as I can.

Viv is just a shortened form of the word "vivarium" and basically means snake cage! :)

You won't get a straight answer on cage size here. It varies with what people are comfortable with doing themselves. A lot of standard corn snake books recomend something about 36" x 12" for a large adult, however I have asked numerous breeders on here and many keep adults in tubs only 24"long.

Kathy Love says a 20 galon long tank is big enough I believe. I think that one is 30" x 12".

See what YOU are comfortable with providing for your snakes :) My larger '05's are in 20 gallons <24 X12> and the smaller are in 10's <20x12>

Congrats on getting into corns! Be carefull, it's addictive!

I keep my 05's in 15qt tubs that are 16x11x6. anything thats a yearling/adult stays in 23X17X6. Adults over 4' stay in 32x17x6. I'm not sure if the numbers are exact but close. They all live in racks. :)

Alot of People who have a bunch of snakes usually put there animals in rack systems. (Racks that hold shoe box size plastic tubs up to sweater box sized tubs) For the most part out of nessecity as space becomes a problem. We have 12 Corn Snakes ranging from babie to sub-adults to adults and we prefer to keep them in vivariums (glass tanks). We are breeding now so a rack system for the babies is going to be a must. But, as for our keepers we like to keep them in an environment that would be as cloase as possible to there natural environments. It's not proven but we think it's less stessful on them plus we like to look at nice set-up and decorated vivs. Our babies we keep in 10 gallon tanks, sub-adults get a 20 gallon long tank and our adults all get a 30 gallon breeder tank to themselves. If we had a few more then that we would probably have to shift to a rack system. Here are a couple examples of our set-ups.

You should also keep in mind that you should only have one (1) snake per vivarium. I believe it is not a good idea to house more then one snake per tank unless your trying to initiate mating.
