Low Humidity No Moss for 1st Shed

kcaven

LOCA for corn snakes !!!
My MoJo is in blue as of two days ago. He refused his meal last night so I will wait til next Sunday. My tank is at 46% humidity (low for some reason??) and he is in his cool hide for the first time since we got him a week and a half ago. I did not know I needed spagnum moss for him while he is in shed so I didnt pick some up for him at the pet store this weekend. The girl who sold him said he has always had good sheds.

Question
1) Can I use anything else at home to help with shedding (for moisture)?
2) How can I increase the amt of humidity in the tank?
3) Which hide do you put the spagnum moss (or whatever else I can use) in, cool or warm?

I did see baby corns in the deli tubs on top of wet papertowels? Do you think that would do the trick?

My corn tanks regularly sit at 40-50% humidity and I've never had a bad shed :shrugs: I personally would wait to see if he has a problem with this shed, before worrying too much :)

If you are concerned then you could make up a moist hide, using a sandwich box or other suitably sized container, keep the lid on and cut a hole in the top or on the side, then fill it with moist crumpled paper towels for the time being. You can get some sphagnum moss next time you're out and you can probably get that a most good garden centres.

Hope that helps,

Ok good I was a little worried. I have the first time "Mom" panics I guess. But after him refusing a meal (apparently for his first time ever) b/c he was in blue I guess I am a little nervous. My tank was at 55-60% humidity for the past week and for some reason its at 46% today.

I, personally, just keep a little spray bottle set aside for my snakes. If it seems like it's getting really dry in their vivs, or they look like they might have a problem shed, I give them a little shower. It makes for great pics too. Here's one where Zelda looks like she has tears after a shower.

None of my five seem to have a problem with the misting, at all. A couple of them actually seem to enjoy it, and will actually start drinking it right off of their skin (even with a fresh water bowl only mere inches away from them)!
As far as going into the water dish, most (but not all) don't seem to like that idea, but are often encouraged to take a drink if I put their face near the water. I do this semi-frequently after a feeding, as they seem to always be thirsty then.
You're doing just fine. I've looked back at some of my posts, and can't believe the stuff I was actually worried about. I just started in September. Probably the fact that I was so worried, and asked so many questions here, is the reason that I feel so comfortable and fairly confident now. It's good that you're asking. Good luck.

Daneale77 is right on the mark. This forum has been a great help to me in climbing the learning curve, and a lot of fun, too. You asked about other materials; I've used damp cotton balls when sphagnum wasn't available. That worked fine. Others have used damp paper towels or newspaper. I've got enough space in my vivs to have a warm and cool moist hide. You don't necessarily have to use a new "hide." You can put the moist material in the existing hide(s) unless the hide cardboard or something similar. Just be sure your snake has a dry choice as well. Chance are, all will go well.

You all are SO helpful! I really appreciate it more than you could know! I will try the misting and forgo the "put em right in the water method!" LOL I also will put some moist cottonballs or papertowels in his warm hide (the cool one is cardboard).

How can I raise the humidity level in the tank if I ever need to?

If you're using an fish-aquarium type vivarium, like some of mine are, what I do is cover the screen top most of the way with a towel and just mist the tank one or two times a day for a couple of days. If the aspen is too damp at the end of this, I just change it, but usually it's okay. This seems to help with mine.
Also, as far as ever having a problem shed, the best luck I've ever had is Nanci's method. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56170&highlight=shed (I hope you don't mind me linking to that, Nanci.)
This is, by far, the most tried and true method used around my house. We actually keep washcloths and towels (for the big ones) that are just for the snakes, if they have problem sheds. (I always enjoy doing all-snake loads of laundry with the towels from that and the towels I use to cover the containers with during feeding.)
Sorry if I'm rambling a bit today. I'm going on less than three hours of sleep again today.
I hope this helps.
