Male or Female... ?

Lucidity

A Walking Contradiction
Greetings! :)

I just recently brought a corn snake into my home.. a baby(my avatar [ of course])...
When at the pet store selecting the snake I asked whether it was male or female.. and well, I was told it was too young to tell.

So what is the proper age to be able to find these things out?
Ive looked on a dozen corn care websites and no dice.
& when the corn reaches the proper age... how does one tell the gender? Would I have to visit the vet.. or is it something visible?

I have one more question regarding another thread on this site.. about females laying "slugs". If my corn turns out to be a female, am I going to have to consider breeding her down the line? The way it was put it made it sound as if it is detrimental to the snake to NOT breed when it has reached that proper age. I have no intention to be a breeder.. and I dont desire to be one eventually...Since I am keeping my corn for the long haul I will do what is neccessary to keep it healthy... I had considered possibly adding another corn to the "family" one day.. but not to breed. So can a female corn be just as happy and healthy without breeding?

Before buying the snake I did my homework... but I never thought of it being harmful to not breed a snake when its in season.. I guess since its not harmful to other pets to not do so.

If I could find these things out it would be helpful. :)
Thank you in advance for anyone who offers their advice...
it is always appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

A baby corn can be sexed by someone who knows what he/she is doing. It is not true that they cannot be. Look for an experienced breeder in your area. Most of them are pretty good at sexing babies, I'm sure. I know there are some members from Indiana on this forum. One of them might be able to point you in the right direction.

As for it being necessary to breed her, the answer is no. Most females do not lay eggs if they have never been exposed to a male. I am sure there are some exceptions, however.

Hi there :) Just noticed that you're also from IN, and I'm from up north, as well. Welcome to the hobby. :) (Unfortunately, I can't recommend a good breeder to check with to have your baby sexed.)

well, it being a baby, it may be kind of hard to tell, but take it you could post a close up profile shot of its tail and one with the belly facing the camera, we could try to visually sex it. If that doesn't work, you might try calling other pet shops in your area. Most of them have people that specifically work in reptiles that may be able to help you (even the dreaded petco). Welcome to the forums and congtaulations on the new family member! You'll need to post more pics so we can oogle him/her. :)
