I'm not yet a snake owner....sadly. I've had a corn snake before when I was like 8 and it escaped. :cry: I was wondering... what's better to get, male or female? And what's the differences? Please and thank you!
PS. If anyone breeds or knows of a place that breeds corn snakes in Oregon. MSG ME! :)
 
There is no real difference in temperament. You get mean and nice snakes of both genders.
Personally I prefer male snakes, but I can't honestly say why. I just like to work with male animals. One of my many quirks. ;)
 
I would suggest that you get a female if you think that you will ever try breeding them, because the females take longer to sexually mature than the males. That way if you do decide to breed you will already have an older female that won't take as long to be ready to breed, and all you have to get is a male

Or could you just buy an adult snake...
 
Really? Wow, I live near LLLReptile and their prices for adults are usually at least $20 more for hatchlings of the same morph. Usually it's about twice the price of hatchlings because of the demand for breeders. Also, there is usually a reason why a breeder would sell a breeder that could make them more money by breeding than by selling. Sometimes it is for innocent reasons, but some people would like to sell an infertile adult as a "proven" breeder. In my experience it's just not worth it.
 
So there's no difference in the size between males and females? I'm not sure if I'd breed my snake but that all makes sense... and yea, where I live adults are a lot more than hatchlings also.
Can you carry your snakes around with you? Like in a bag or on your arm or anything?

Really? Interesting! Over here I think corn snake breeding isn't so popular yet as it is in the states and most people who buy snakes just want a cool pet. Therefore adults are cheaper because the owners just want to get rid of them. Most people seem to prefer a small cutie than a great big adult. I personally would always prefer to buy an adult, and my petshop propreitor friend tells me she can get adults for me much cheaper than hatchlings.

There is sometimes a size difference I think, but I can never remember which it is - some accounts say females are larger, some say males. I always thought that females were in general larger, but I can't gurantee that for you, sorry.

You can walk around with your snakes if that's what you mean, like just around your house, but it's not a good idea to take them actually OUT with you. It would be too stressful for the snake. And besides, an awful lot of people are terrified of snakes. It isn't really fair to go out in public and brandish their fear in their faces. :)
 
From my experience:

Males do tend to grow slightly larger, but there isn't a lot in it.

Females tend to be slightly more placid (at least, mine are), again, not a lot in it.

Males can get a bit uppity and go off their food for a while during breeding season.

If I was to recommend one, I'd plump for a female. :)
