Mandy the normal corn snake

Fingers crossed for the follow up to be clear! She's so pretty and sounds so sweet, it's wonderful that she found a mama as attentive to her health as you. Happy adoption-versary!

Thanks, Karl. I really appreciate your sharing about your Boa. I agree that they do know.

No, they took her in back, with my permission, while I was in the waiting room. Fortunately, I already know and trust the vet so had no problem trusting her to him and the tech. I figure I don't need to be a distraction at that moment.

I tend to believe she has had this and it flared up, but I just don't know. Her slight weight loss was not enough to alert me to this lacking any other symptoms. I talked to my vet about my husbandry and hand washing. I am more aware now that I know she's got somehing, but it's not like I was a slacker before.

The prescription is: Ponazuril (30 mg/ml) - 0.55 ml PO SID for 3 days. (For those without a medical background PO in this context is "by mouth" and SID is "once per day".) The 0.55 ml dosage is based on her 550 gram weight.

The medication is a liquid administered by a syringe and tube down her esophagus. They use a soft spatula to open her mouth, like they do for a normal oral exam. It protects her tongue and gives them access to her esophagus. My understanding is that this is a newer medication that actualy kills the coccidia.

Thanks for asking, Karl. At first I couldn't even talk about this, I was so taken aback. Now it's really helpful to share it.

Thanks for your kind words, Albertagirl. Yep, it has been a wonderful first year with this precious girl! She's definitely a blessing.

I'm glad you're able to share here. It really helps to have supportive people in your life. And that's true for Mandy. She knows you are looking after her and helping her to get better.

Thanks DLena. I think she knows.

I appreciate the support here, too. This is a great group.

Mandy's digesting right now so I thought I'd post the latest configuration of her Mandy house. This is a large ExoTerra on 42x18 in black coated wire shelves. Cleo has a similar house on the shelf above. It was overkill but I bought the Nexel shelves that are rated for 600 lbs each. I call the whole thing my snake condos. The shelf above is just tall enough to hold three sweater boxes used for transport and feeding bins. It's all in my bedroom.

Among the things I did today was take Mandy's fecal sample to the vet for a test following her treatment for coccidia. I got a call from my vet about 1/2 hour ago with good news. The fecal float was clear! I'm so relieved.

I never get tired of watching my girl Mandy. She's so graceful and totally magnificent as she glides across the beige "grass" of my living room.

(I cleaned the carpet this weekend and I do use pet safe carpet shampoo.)

She's so big, and very cute too.

I noticed she's very shiny as well. You did a magnificent job waxing and polishing her.

Thanks DLena. That means a lot coming from you who I look up to as a very special snake mama!

I'm glad Mandy's check up went well! She looks great on the carpet. (I guess she's your carpet python) Can you imagine the cleaning lady (We'll all her Mrs. McGillicuddy) if she were to walk in and find Mandy crawling around? :eek1:

:roflmao:Lol Ken. Hadn't thought of her as a carpet python-- good one! As to the cleaning lady, if I ever see one, other than me, I'll let you know.

I was in a store last weekend buying a couple of bottles of wine, and I walked in with Rufus wrapped around my neck.

I did my shopping in the store and walked up to the counter. There was a little young blonde haired girl working there and she looked up at me and suddenly gasped! I thought she was going to scream or maybe she was scared of snakes. On the Contrary!

She yelled, "Oh he's beautiful. What kind of snake is he?" Then we proceeded to talk about snakes for a few minutes. She informed me that she has a 7 foot long Red Tail Boa at home and she absolutely loves snakes.

The real funny part is, she asked me if she could touch him and I said sure. When she reached her hand up towards him, he crawled right off my neck and into her hands.

I think he made a new friend. You never know who the lovers or haters are going to be, but there's not a better way to start a conversation with somebody than to bring a snake into the equation.
