The shed skin can stretch to be very long and skinny compared to the snake.
The easiest bet would be to use the software listed in that post.
Other options are trying to force you snake to move in a straight line & measure the distance between two reference points that he reaches (that's what I did). Or you could try running a piece of string down the legnth of his body and measuring that. But if your snake gets all excited and fast moving, those could be very tricky.
The measuring program works great, and it's a lot more accurate than trying to get those wiggle worms to go in a straight line. Skins stretch a lot, so that isn't an accurate measurement at all.
