my girlfriend surprised me yesterday by bringing home a new cornsnake (it is a ultramel motley i believe).

we tried to measure it but it was squirming about all over the place and he even bit my girlfriend (which made me laugh a bit).

i was wondering if there was any trick to measuring a snake or is it literally just trying to hold it down next to a ruler?

Well, I usually set out the ruler and try to coax them into slithering along it. Or wait until they're stretched out along the edge of the cage. I have to keep the tape measure on hand and keep an eye on them for a few minutes to get it to work but seems to always get an accurate measurement without stressing them out.

Yep - nice app.

Another useful guideline is that a Corn's shed (if you can get a complete one) will be about a third longer than the actual snake because it stretches as it's pulled off. For a rough idea, measure the shed and deduct a third.
