Surrounded by snakes
After waiting nearly 3 months (for the weather to warm up at the breeder's home), my little Western Hognose girl has finally arrived! :) She got here this morning, and I actually almost threw her away... seriously, the snake bag was so light I thought she'd escaped at first. Luckily I noticed the little worm shadow, and pulled her out before she ended up in the trash. LOL

I named her Charlotte from the book "Charlotte's Web," for two reasons - first is going along with my theme of children's lit characters for my non-BPs (who have Shakespearean names), and the other reason being that I can name her future mate Wilbur. Ya know, the pig from that book. :D Anyway, here she is!!

Settling into her 6qt tub... using a cut bottle for water now, since I forgot to buy a small bowl (will get it tomorrow).

Thanks! :) I love the black belly too, and even though I knew they had those, it still shocked me in person... it's soooooo dark. She's a sweetie too, btw, and has popped her head out to say "hello" whenever I peek in.
 
Thank you both. :) She ate for me last night, and seems to be settling in nicely - spending the majority of her time burrowed in the substrate. :cool: They are so darned cute, and I'm really glad I added one to my collection! Here are some feeding pics:

My hognose is my darling, my favorite snake of any I've ever had. Enjoy little Charlotte, she's adorable!

Great pick up! She's a cutie. You will have years of fun with her as well as any others you acquire. Be aware though that females can really have ravenous appetites, especially when they are entering adulthood. I have some adult females that I have to be very careful of whenever I open their tubs as they are all mouth coming out after me. It's almost like watching a bad monster movie but in real life. The only reason I mention this is because this has always been the time that I've been bitten, when the hogs are hungry and I'm not fast enough. ;)

Also be aware that hoggies will sometimes go off of food for extended periods of time, especially males. As long as they aren't losing any significant amount of weight and they were established eaters before, you probably have nothing to be concerned over. I have several that go off of food for months at a time only to resume eating whenever they feel like it. It can be a bit frustrating, but that's all part of the hoggie quirkiness. :)

And don't become alarmed when your female gets huge while your male stays relatively small. Males seem to top out at about 100-150 grams on the average while females get to 300-500 grams on the average. What's most impressive about the males is when they try to hook-up with these large girls during the breeding season. That's when things get really exciting and you'll understand why, should you ever get into breeding them. It's a rollercoaster ride to say the least.

Thanks all for the comments - and good advice above, "DeadMouse." ;) She is too freaking cute, and yes she does eat like a pig! The second she swallowed that pinkie mouse, she bolted almost out of the tub, and was obviously looking for more... then when I was feeding the other snakes today, she was pressed up against the tub like "Got one for me?" I'll give her two pinks next week, and maybe bump her up to fuzzies in another feeding or two. Btw, can I see a picture of your pink hognose, DeadMouse?
 
P.S. I got a female at the suggestion of a snake friend, since he warned me about the male feeding strikes - and said females are less stubborn/ornery overall.

First off, you are very welcome! I always enjoy talking about hoggies. :)

I wouldn't necessarily warn anybody off of getting a male based on the hunger strike factor which usually is a result of a male wanting to mate instead of eat. In fact, males are sometimes more appealing because they are typically 1/3 the size of an adult female and they aren't as likely to bite due to a feeding response. However, males can have a tendency to be a bit more defensive in terms of hooding, hissing and head butting whereas my females tend to be more menacing by just hissing instead of all the other antics that the males exhibit. All in all, they can be very different in terms of behaviors despite being the same species unlike all of my kingsnakes and rat snakes which tend to act pretty much the same regardless of gender.

Granted, some pictures are quite old now, especially those of our Pink Pastels which no longer show that depth of color as they've washed out a bit with age.
