i am trying to breed mice, but one of my adults got a problem with its eyes. i am not sure what but they seem to be stuck shut and have a crusty yellow susstanse on then, what is the problem, i dont think he can breed like this so should i cull him?, would it be ok to feed him to my snake?

Sounds like and eye infection. I would bet tertamicin (sp?) would clear it up. A topical ointment would be best.. Check with a rodent site, then check and see if you can get the stuff you need from your local Vet Supply..

I agree it sounds like a little infection which tetramyacin or something of that sort would clear up. But it might just be cheaper and less of a hassle to get a new breeder rather than having to buy the ointment and apply it until the infection goes away. :shrugs:
 
poor lil guy. it sounds like it's not that serious, lot's of cats get that sort of eye infection. I usually boil camomile tea, wait tll it's lukewarm and wipe his eyes with camomile tea soaked cottom wool.

Well, if I had this kind of problem in one of my established colonies, that give me good number of babies I would at least try to cure them.
Starting new colony can be pain in he backside, especially if you don't have big supplies to wait for mice to start giving you litters.
 
Yeah, it's been 2 months today, that I replaced a female breeder. Still no babies! :headbang: I wouldn't feed anything with an infection to any of my snakes :wavey:

Those dern mice Mike! I had real problems getting my breeders started as well at the beginning... The breeders kept dying randomly for some reason or when they DID have babies...they'd kill them all...which was only a litter of about 4 usually. I finally just got frustrated and got rid of the whole batch. I picked up a new batch of mice after that, and these mice are FLOURISHING with nice litter sizes and no eating of the babies.

I'm not doing anything different than I was before, except that I have them in a diff enclosure(they were in a critter keeper). I don't get it, it seems like a lot of folks seem to have the same problems when first starting a colony. I now have a second flourishing colony that are all babies from my first colony.

yea i think i might ust have to get a new male becus he is a quite a bit smaller then the females, and i have only had them for about 1.4 weeks now so........ and i dont. now tht i decided to take him out og my colony should i just cull him or what should i do with him? :shrugs:
 
Well...if you are going to cull him, you might as well feed him to one of your snakes. The eye infection isn't going to transfer over to the snake, so you shouldn't have a problem. A new breeder male might do better for you.
 
im cornsnakekid92's bro, and we just culled the breader. we didn't keep it cause we thought it isnt worth the risk. thanks for all of ur advice
