Missing Snake!

Hi,

Got up this morning to find my 6 month old snake missing! Have searched round the room and will do so again more thoroughly. Have got several boxes sat around the place with pinkys waiting - any more suggestions? Have read a couple of threads that mention flour - why is this??

Any help would be appreciated.

You can leave flour out so that if your snake is still in the house you could see snake tracks in the flour.

Also you can lay those realy noisy plastic bags around the border of halls or rooms, and then stay up at night and listen. Also look inside drawers or desks, hanging plants, the top of curtains or blinds could hold a little snake to. I hope you find it.

Thanks for the info. Still not surfaced, am hoping he is just hiding and will pop out some time tonight!! Won't give up on him yet although I have a fear he may have squeezed down a hole behind the fireplace! Hope not!!!!!

Blinds are a good place to look- my 0.1 anery got away at about that age, and i freaked out because i knew she was in the kitchen- after a frantic search of all the sharp objects, My much taller friend found her stretched out across the top of the blinds (which, consequently, i was to short to see).
good luck!!
PS try searching the forums for more ideas of where to look... under/inside dressers, etc...

lost two different hatchlings on two different occasions in second story bedroom. Found both, two stories down in basement. Don't know how they made it down two stories but always look in the darkest, warmest, furthest down you can go.

Good luck and thats exactly what it takes!

Thanks for the tips!

He's still not surfaced....but will keep searching! Have got another supply of pinkies so I have plenty to leave out - am just hoping the little critter will feel hungry enough to find them - how good is their sense of smell?? Have a couple of pinkies spread about but not sure how far away he would be able to pick up on the scent.

Off to check the cellar now!!!!!!!!!

No sign :-(

Really miss the little chap....

One question - are they likely to go up or down?? I have a cellar below which has a panel ceiling but there are a few holes at the edges where he could get down through if he was under the floor. I also have two floors above, both with bedrooms.

I don't know...they seem to be really good at both. They get into places you would never imagine they could.
When my amel was only 13" long, he escaped and my dad found him in the BATHTUB! How can a 13" snake scale a ~2' slick "wall" ? Who knows.

Personally, the pinkies never worked for me, probably because the scent of pinkies is really weak. And this was in the summer so they rotted pretty quickly and the smell was so gross I think even a snake would be REPELLED by the stench instead.

You just have to keep looking, esp at night along the walls and stuff.
Good luck! I hope you find him soon.

I would recommend carefully moving furniture and looking behind in all the cracks... I think about a week ago someone lost their hatchling and found it wedged in a crack behind a dresser.

Thanks, keep looking periodically but no luck so far! He only ate a week ago so won't be hungry enough yet! Just hoping the temperature drop we are just having will make him look for somewhere warm to sleep!!

Am a little worried about him being caught by my cat - the cat has freedom of the kitchen on a night via his cat flap and the snake (Squeaky is his name!) could have gone under the door to the kitchen from his viv - just hope the cat didn't have him as a snack or pick him up and take him outside!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't give up. They are always in a place you would never think of looking. Try under mattresses and sheets to.

Blue painters tape!

I have had luck using it by running sections along the edges of walls. I caught my lone corn hatchling escapee this year with it. It's not too adhesive as to rip scales off, but it'll trap the little buggers. Also might make the poor guy very vunerable to your cat, though. For the record, dirty mouse bedding seems to be as much an attractant as an actual dead mouse. Maybe a critter cage with a live mouse in it would bring him near...
Also be sure and put out water in the room he escaped from. Dehydration will kill them more quickly than starvation.
As for bags/rustling noise trick, I'd think a 2003 hatchling would be too small to make much of a ruckus.
Try the tape, put out water, and keep the cat out of the likley room(s) it would be in. Good luck.

Thanks for that tip, think I will give it a go. Have got flour around the wall edges at the moment and think there may have been a small print of him going under the door but have seen nothing else yet. It don't half make you paranoid - I now check under every cushion before I sit down, under the mattress and covers before I go to bed, I empty my waste bin piece by piece just in case he's snuggled up in there, and I even check inside the washer etc. before I put it on!!!

I wish he'd come back soon - this is turning me bats!!

He's Back!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to share my good news with you! Squeaky is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just about to go out at lunch time when I decided that I would go and check all the corners in the kitchen and cellar since I had not been on my daily search as yet. I looked down the side of the washer, saw a little bit of orange and thought it must be wishful thinking. I bent down for a closer look and there he was! Curled up in the corner behind the washer!!

He has lost a little weight but looked pleased to have been found. I offered him some water and he gulped loads down. We then put him in his vivarium and he immediately went to the heat mat and curled up on it. He must have been freezing being out of his cage for 9 days!! We are going to try feeding him tonight – I’m sure he will welcome it!

Anyway, just thought I’d let you all know! Thanks to everyone for their suggestions/help - it was all very much appreciated.

BFN, A very happy DannaBlue!!!!!! :)

thats great that you found him, they are both very pretty snakes. i always go insane when my snakes get lose... ive learned that they turn up a lot sooner if you stop looking. my rat snake actually got outside and my dog found him, alive and well, 4 months later. one corn escaped and we found him in the vacuum, after we turned it on, but hes alright, just a small scratch. many other stories, but we have successfully snake-proofed the corns' cage, our "houdini" of the bunch has yet to get out since we got the new set-up.

Wow, 4 months and to be found outside fit and well is amazing!!

I thought they were pretty too which is the main reason for me getting them. Hopefully we have now secured the viv so he cannot escape again!! But you never know!
