New snake, hasn't shed with me yet, maybe never has.

I want to be extra safe for his first shed.

DIY humid box, bathing, or misting - If all these are equally effective, misting seems to be the easiest.

So do you literally mist the snake (close or far), or just the tank.

And when his eyes go cloudy? when they clear? or when his skin begins to separate?

Humid box is my favourite. The snake can choose whether to use it or not and you don't have to worry about timing, what to mist etc.

Disadvantage of misting is that it can get the entire tank damp and you could end up with the opposite problem. Plenty of folks here do mist though.

I wouldn't bother with bathing unless a problem actually occurs. Some Corns hate it cand can get really stressed. No point trying it if it's unnecessary.
 
You should not have to do anything ~unless~ humidity is too low.
If added humidity is needed, you can either provide the snake with a humid hide, place a water bowl on the warm side, or mist once, maybe twice, daily.
Added humidity would start when the snake's eyes begin to cloud ... unless you are able to note, an impending shed, just prior to eyes clouding (and could start providing added humidity at that time). Once the snake sheds, added humidity is no longer necessary.
With misting, you would mist the snake and its viv. You do not need to mist up close.... but not so far away that you miss the snake and the inside of its viv.;)

The idea is to raise the humidity level (not just wetting a snake).
If you mist the snake, outside it's viv, the dampness (on the snake) will not remain for long (will, quickly, dry).
It is best if misting is done in the snake's viv. Yes, even doing some light misting, of the viv (especially on the warm side), as well as misting the snake... this could be the sides, of the viv, &/or parts of the internal contents (such as the substrate).
If you do not soak the viv, and you allow a drying out before misting again, there should be no problem with potential RIs, or scale rot, etc.
 
What are the levels in your viv?

If this is your first shed with the snake it might not need help.
