i know this is probably a dumb question but what do mites look like??

i cleaned the tank today and changed from my normal substrate to repti bark. i checked on the snakes about an hour ago and i saw a little bug in there so i grabbed the little git and squished him flat!!!

checked the snakes for any signs of anything creepy crawly but to be honest i dont have a clue what mites look like?

the bug i pulled out had legs and little black body and antennie and wings? was it maybe some thing that was lurking in the new bag of bark?

i doubt that that thing was a mite but would like to know what they look like just incase and im sure that there are a few of us that dont no what they look like either!

any information would be greatly appreiciated!!!

nope...not a mite. Mites don't have wings, they just crawl everywhere. They look like tiny round black spots that move :)

I had something like that... but it came from some reptile bark that I bought... I dont know what they were but they looked like little termites or something I wasnt sure... I just cleaned out my Viv and put in some Aspen and I havent had any problem with it yet... I think the Reptile bark is alot more moist and its not cleaned to well!!! so I would assume that it was the substrate not mites!!!
