Moma, her eggs and a question...

Gronk

1.1 Beautiful kids....
Folks...

Well this evening my first clutch of the year was produced (smile). 16 beautiful healthy eggs from the Amel Aztec below...daddy is the big guy that's my avatar pic (Grin).

This is my first attempt at using vermiculite as an incubation medium. Do the eggs look covered enough to you ? They were quite clumped so several are buried..my concern is the upper eggs not being in the medium. I tossed a small pad of NZ Spag. moss on top before the pics. It's right out of mom's laying box she's pictured in.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Hi Gronk, I was in your shoes too. I always use the Sphagum Moss and was going to go with vermiculite this year. My first 3 clutches came out clumped so I just decided to stick with what has worked the last 3 years. I wasn't comfortable leaving them so out in the open. I'm no expert at all, I just try and play it safe. I'm intrested in if others who have clumped eggs use any other medium besides moss. Good Luck

I just successfully hatched a clutch of 14 (100% hatch rate) using a vermiculite setup very similar to what you have pictured there. Mine were no more buried than those in your picture.

Next clutch (13) are due to hatch in about a week or so. Same setup, they look perfect ... I'm expecting another 100% there.

As long as you check the moisure level is holding up every couple of weeks, they should be fine.

I should have added ... both clutches were clumped.

The egges at the bottom were buried, top ones not.

Thanks folks (smile).

I guess I'm just the "nervous Father" :) . I used Spag. Moss last year for the incubation container, but only had 1 clutch. This year I'm hoping for 4-5 clutches and found vermiculite easier to obtain in quantity.

I was surprised there were 16 eggs..in the lay box looked like 9 in a clump..but my Wife counted 16 when we transfered them! All were looking really good (please Murphy..leave me the hell alone..lol). Both parents are first time breeders so I'm very pleased with their "efforts".
