mouse chasing tail

Why is my large female (possibly pregnant) female mouse running around in circles? Sometimes it is tight circles and sometimes it is circles around the cage. It just began the last few days and i'm a little worried.

I have seen this a lot in lab and pet-store mice. The first thing to do is see if she has enough toys and things to play with and explore--toilet paper tubes, an exercise wheel, something to climb on. If she does, and is still tail-chasing to the point where it interferes with her necessary behaviors (eating, drinking) she may need to be euthanized to keep her from starving or dehydrating to death. I would watch to make sure she is still eating and drinking enough to sustain her activity level, and consider euthanizing her if she starts losing a lot of weight.

In short, provide toys and a wheel first, and if the behavior persists or gets worse, watch for signs of starvation/dehydration. Best of luck.

You may want to also look to see if maybe she has a sore or abcess on her rear end. Possibly even look to see if she broke her tail. I would also like to know if she catches it? If she is not attempting to catch, just chase, she may have a neurological disorder or disease. And the other person is than correct. The best thing to do is euthanize. Don't wait for the babies to be born. They may have the same condition. Good luck.
