mouse defrosting....

ok...so i just recieved my mice from rodent pro.....and i thawed it in hot tap water(they are hoppers) and when i took it out, the intestines were in the bag and out of the mouse...why did this happen i used frozen food b4 and this never happend...

I have no idea what you mean or why it happened but you shouldn't use hot water to defrost a prey item as it will cook it. Always you warm water or else leave it to defrost naturally.

It sounds as if you defrosted your mice with water thats too hot and they "exploded" - If this is the case then you just need to defrost them at a slower pace. With warm water, Not too hot.

How are you folks defrosting? I usually put water in a bowl and microwave. When the water is really hot I take it out of the microwave and put the mouse in the water (mouse in sandwich bag). I let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour.

Personally I dont force a defrost. I take out the mice I need on feeding days and place them on a paper plate early in the morning in my boiler room. A little while later all my prey items are defrosted naturally.

I just leave my frozen mice out for around an hour or so and everything should be thawed up.....

some of my snakes wouldn't eat thawed ones...but with a little heating...it works perfectly.....

I use hot water but it isn't really hot. I turn the tap to the hottest possible setting (which isn't very hot at all) and use a cup of that to defrost. Pinkies I leave for 5 minutes and hoppers I leave for 15. Either way, I always press them to make sure the insides are squishy and not still frozen.

Yeah, I give them a bit of a feel too, to make sure they're totally defrosted and not still cold inside.

Normally, I just leave the mice to defrost on a paper towel near the viv so the smells drift around. With my fuzzies, I just leave them alone and come back when I'm ready to feed, which is usually an hour or two later. If I'm in a hurry to feed, I'll put some warm water in a cup and the mouse in a plastic bag and leave until squishy.

Like most of you guys, I leave mine to defrost naturally and then heat the slightly with warm water to give them that alive kinda feel. It works for my snakes

If I'm defrosting fuzzies, or small mouse then I let them warm in the air until they feel completely defrosted. If it's larger mice then I use a spare end of a heat pad to help the process along.
In the summer I use a spare small plastic snake box with a lid to defrost in, to stop any flies getting to the mice.

i let mine stand for about an hour then dunk them in warm water for a few seconds, no probs yet....

i get my pinkies out in the morning leave them in my defrosting tin and then feed when i get home if the snake is still hungary
i defrost them one in a bag under the tap

Hey Nyr99,
I know what you mean, I once had some mice explode on me . I thought that the supplier had stabbed them and then froze them. I found out that if the water is too hot( even from the tap) it can cause the stomachs to burst.
I usually place the fuzzies,hoppers ect in a plastic bag and put them in warm water. I may have to change the water a few times. I find that if I place the food directly in the water my snakes dont grab them as quickly. I am not sure if the water dilutes their scent or what.
