Mouse explosion

Mice! They taste so nice!
My 4th generation of mice have had their first litters, it's hard to tell but there are at least 50-60 pinks from the 3 girls! My policy of picking the biggest, fastest growing babies as keepers seems to have paid off. These are the biggest litters I've had. The pregnant doe was golf ball-sized last night, she's slim today!

Thanks! just trying to do a head count without disurbing the new mums, and they've been stealing pinkies off each other all competing for the best nest-site! I'm sorry this is fuzzy, but had to get a shot of the proud father being used as a baby-warmer. He was looking after about 12, then after a bout of stealing had around 30 to look after!

Wow! Congratulations!

My females won't let the male near the babies. He came to sniff them and one of the females bopped him in the face with her paws so he ran off. He also sleeps in his own corner now and the females and babies sleep together.

Congrats again!

Due to the interest of the cat, the mice live in my bedroom. Last night was a bit noisy, with squeaking babies and then the sounds of 'mousie-lurve' from the tank!

The babies have been moved again into a box, but managed to snap this pic of a pinkie pile first

Man I sure wish my mice would get busy. After 2 litters from the same female I haven't had any and I've had to resort to buying pinks and fuzzies from the petstore. I can't keep doing that or the snakes will eat me out of house and home..lol

That's sure alot of pinks from 3 mommies. Congrats!

I swear I've had my mice so long they're becoming senior citizens, and they JUST had their first litter. I didn't keep any babies though, they're fat again, so maybe I'll keep babies from this litter.

hi guys.
I was just wonderin.......this is probably the stupidest question ever...lol....but you keep all these mice to feed to your snakes?? and you breed them and stuff so you dont have to buy from the shop?

I do. One of my snakes had feeding problems, so I had to get a supply of live pinks for her. (just in case you're told otherwise, it's not illegal in the UK, as long as it's not in public, or proved to be causing suffering to the mouse). I'd not advocate feeding anything bigger than a peach fuzzy live, as there is a risk of injury if a bigger mouse defends itself. I euthanise and freeze my own mice as a supplement to the ones I buy, as my local supplier sometimes has some very ropey-looking specimens in the freezer so I used to run out sometimes rather than buy them

very interesting!
I was just wondering, i thought you wouldnt really be breeding the mice because you just really love the mice! lol I bet thats really helpful as well! Man i bet your snakes lead a very privelidged life! do you sell supply pinkys to anyone if you breed them? or do you just use them all just for your own snakes??

I don't breed on a big enough scale to sell them. I'd recommend it if you've got the space though. My home-bred mice are bigger and fatter than the ones of the same stage that I buy

Awww, some of us breed mice because we like 'em, too.

I like the colours, mind - and playing "Mousey Eugenics - genetics of personality and colour" is fun, especially when I know that the animals I cull out of the mouse breeding program will go to feed critters from the snake-and-lizard programs :)

I don't produce enough mice yet to sell them to anyone else - I've given away one or two but that's about it.

I've got a deal with a local petshop where I swap mice for dogfood if I grow on some pretty ones! As both my suppliers average 40p per pinky I'm going to see how running 2 colonies works out

wow that looks cool,,, but hearing those noise's "mice" while you sleep effect you any... god that would freak me out but i guess your use to it

wow thats a great idea is it a mom and pop store??? or is it a corp.?

LOL those pictures are great. The pinkies are soo cute and look truly edible :)

Your colony has come along way from the days of producing litters of 3, and then having them cannibilised :)

Nice One

They certainly have! Starting them was pretty frustrating, but I seem to have worked it out now. When I culled them one of the pinks had had it's tail bitten off, probably during all the baby-stealing from the mums. The wound was clean so I'm now sorry I didn't leave that one to grow and call it 'Stumpy'

LOL :grin01:

Your pure evil :)

You could create a new stumpy when your next batch arrives....not that im suggesting pinky tail chopping is advisable :puke01:
