Mouse mites...

Some of you might remember a post I made a while back about my pair of feeder mice. Well appearantly the petstore wasn't as good as I thought it was, because it turns out one of them has a mite problem. It's the female. She has a bald patch that's getting worse right above her hip. So I have a few questions Im hoping someone can help me with.

1. I did a little research and found something called Ivermectin that's supposed to cure mites. Is this available in petstores? Or do I have to get it through a vet?

2. Right now, only the girl mouse has it/shows patchy baldness. But since they're housed together, should I assume the boy has it too?

3. Can the mites get on other animals? like snakes, dogs, or even humans? Ever since I found out she's had them, I've been really careful about handling and always made sure I washed my hands afterwards. But I'm still afraid I might've transfered the mites onto something else.

Thanks for any help!

it would be safe to assume so

they can get on snakes I don't know about anything else you listed

at pet stores they have sprays you can get that they use when they get a bad shipment of mice

good luck with getting rid of the mites

You need to get Ivermectin from a vet, and it does work, but then you can't feed the babies to your snakes because they get it in their blood from the mother's milk. The mites won't infest your snakes or rats or people because they are species specific. There are mouse mites, rat mites, and even human mites. What I have used to get rid of my rats mites was to use "Seven Dust" powder in their cage. I got it at Home Depot. You just use a teaspoon of it in the bottome of their cage when you clean it. Do that about 4 times in a row and they should be gone, but also clean the hides and wheels in bleach to help kill them.

You can get Ivermectin at most farm supply stores. I have no idea what the dosage for mice is though. I think Sevin Dust would be a better try. I've used it before in my cages and we usually put a small amount in our rodent cages at work.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll give sevin dust a try. Now do I just clean the cage with it and then dump it out, or do I leave the stuff in there with the mice?

Clean the cage like you normally would. Then dry it out with a towel. Then sprinkle a spoonful in the bottom of the cage and spread it around. Then put clean bedding in like you normally would. Don't use the Sevin Dust to clean the cage out, that would be WAY too much exposure.

Something strange happened... I thought the bald patch looked a little weird the past couple of days. But today I realized new hair was actually growing in. Now I haven't had the chance to buy any Sevin dust yet, so I'm not sure why the problem kinda cured itself. But the stranger thing is, my mouse used to be all black, but the fur growing in is white!

Does anybody know why this happened? I don't get it at all. Maybe the mites killed her pigment cells? Or maybe it's not mites at all??!?
