Mouse noob

I am considering breeding mice and rats fo my corns and selling the extras to my local petshop. Do any you guys have any tips on how i should get started. :wavey:

I'm going to go to my local pet shop tomorrow and buy 1 male and three female mice to breed. I'm gonna leave the male in with the females for about two weeks to try and get all the mice pregnant. After that I'm going to separate so i don't have any unwanted early pregnancies. Is it OK if i just feed the male off to one of my snakes, and buy a new one after my females have had some time to rest after giving birth. I'm going start off with mice until I'm a little more experienced and then I'm going to move up to rats. I have a couple of snakes that are about ready to eat rat pups. Ill probably sell the extras to my local petshop. If you have anything to add it would be much appreciated. :wavey:

you can also raise up babies for the next generation of breeding.. that way mice are free forever ;) well untill your collection outgrows your breeding capabilities :p

Why take the male out?

Mice colonies are quite delicate. Once you establish a colony adding or subtracting from that colony really cuts down on production. I've made the mistake of adding an extra female and ended up with a dead colony. The male mouse will eat babies that aren't his but with his own babies he can be quite a good father. My male helps out with the young ones.

Also, if you're breeding rodents for snake food there's no such thing as a "unwanted early pregnancy".

Basic tips:
One male to colony
Don't add any extra female mice unless they are born to the colony.
Waterbottle
cat litter under the substrait to reduce smell

good luck

raising up males will slow things down to like over 2 months between litters., Introducing new males to already established colonies tends to get the males killed. Best results are when you leave the male and females and dont mess with them. you can always freeze the surplus.

Most definitely LEAVE THE MALE IN THE COLONY! Do not remove the male - just leave him in there, and let them do their thing. Take the feeders out as you need them. Once the babies are 3 weeks old, remove them from the cage - either feed them to something, euthanize them and put them in the freezer for future feeding, set them up in a different cage, or sell them/give them away. The three females will continue to produce new litters for you, so you will have a steady supply of feeders.
