Mouse Set-ups

Osmond,
The net/mesh is hardware cloth......

Thank you for your detailed description.I'm going to look for the proper hardware cloth to make my own mice racks. And one more thing I would like to ask, the hardware cloth you used divided into two parts ,front and rear. Is it for any special reason? Is the front part as high as the rear part?

The best hardware cloth Ive found for both mice and rats is 1/3". With the 1/2" i have few problems but get the occasional "suicide" ... they get their heads through the mesh but their body wont follow ... by the time they try to get their head out there is an excess of blood trapped in their heads and necks ... getting them out can be quite gruesome.

The wire is divided on the racks so that the food takes up no more than 1/4 of the space so they get plenty of air exchange. The wire is actually just one large piece, this makes it much more stable and fewer things that the tubs can get hung up on. If you want specifics on the breeder mouse rack Im sure I can find my origional plans and take close ups pics of anything youd like. This was actually the first wide rack I built so parts of it are quite "rough"

Thank you for your advices. My original idea is to divide. The hardware cloth in to two parts as you made. Besides, I'll make the front part lower than another so the mice could reach the feeds more easily. Certainly I'll follow your way, I'm sure that I don't want to see the same thing happened in my house.

In addition, about water supply, I searched American website and found that there are many breeder use the water supply system with a pail , a pipe and one thing like a faucet. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything to replace it in Taiwan. I could just put several individual bottles (each one about 70 C.C.) for their water supply. Do you have any other suggestions about this?

There is no real need to lower anything ... If the mice cant reach it they will jump up and hang from the mesh ... doesnt create any problems at all. The more divisions, steps, ledges, etc. that you have increases the liklihood of an escapee. So I tend to keep everything as simple as possible.

I actually have the automatic watering system you are referring to ... Once I had it fully installed I couldnt ever tweak it to where I was really happy with it ... so I replaced it all with water bottles. The choice is really yours ... I prefer water bottles ... but now that I am refilling 100 a day im seriously debating putting the auto waterer back up.

My mice watering bottles are 250 ml. 70 cc's = 70 ml ... so that shouldnt be a problem ... but it will require daily attention. The max 70 ml will last one of my setups of 1:5 is 1.5 days (they go through about 50-75 ml of water a day)
