Moving - In Limbo.

Hey everyone,

My partner and I will be moving near the end of the summer, and I haven't ever had to move with my critters before. We were hoping to be able to have about a week or two overlap between places so we could slowly move our things out, rather than all at once.

I always wondered why it is that often you have to be out of your current place by the last day of the month, and usually cannot move in to your new place until the first of the next month. What do you do for that one night!?
It is now even more of a concern for me with snakes (and soon to be a blue tongued skink). I am not terribly worried about my corn, because she can do without a UTH for one night so long as I don't feed her any time near to our move. However, for my ball python and skink, they do require higher heat - and for the skink specifically, UVB light.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be done with the move, and where to keep the reptiles warm and comfortable? We have thought of dismantling their PVC enclosures, setting them up at a friends/relatives for a night or two, and then moving them. However that is a lot of added work (which we of course will already be doing with the move). We would like to conserve as much time and energy as possible.

If anyone has had successful (or unsuccessful) experiences with moving homes with their snakes/reptiles, I would love to hear about them!

Thank you all in advance. Cheers!

Get a hotel room.

Also, you might ask your new place if you can move in before the first and pay a prorated rent. It would give you a few days to get stuff out of the old place and into the new.

Thanks for the suggestion, but WHERE we stay isn't the issue. It's where the snakes stay; as in, tank-wise. We have no issues finding somewhere to stay - be it hotel (which, how would I sneak my snakes in anyway?), a friend's, etc. I'm meaning where do the reptiles go specifically where I can regulate their heat. The ball python needs 80F and the skink will need a UVB lamp mounted somewhere.

That's a good idea about the prorated rent. I have not heard of that before!

Don't worry about setting them up in a tank or anything.
Pack them up just as if you were going to ship them, and they'll be fine.

If its one night they will be more than fine. All my critters sit overnight when I vend at expos. Meaning they have no heat from Saturday morning until Sunday night.

Oh! :)
Thank you! I wasn't sure if they'd be okay - definitely not worried about the corn - but the others...!

Just gotta make sure I correctly mark any boxes/containers. LOL!

Depending on how many critters you have, I would just take them into the hotel with you. I put all of my 10 snakes in Ziploc containers (with air holes), and put those containers into a big styrofoam cooler so getting it into the hotel wasn't an issue. And then I made sure to put a do not disturb sign on the door, so no cleaning person would accidentally discover them. At the end of the night, I gave them each a drink, although they probably would have been fine without it.

You will just want to make sure you have adequate heating or cooling for the drive, if the temperatures are going to be extreme in either direction. And for that, you can just buy a heating or cooling pack.

Thanks!!
I should have mentioned, we aren't moving across the country or anything. Just moving apartments :) in the same town!
I more or less wanted to see if they'd be alright without their vives for the one night, if for some reason we aren't able to move them out of the old place + into the new place all in one day.

I really appreciate the suggestions!

A friend of mine just moved and they had a bird, two beardies, a ball python, a crestie, three roach colonies... and everything that goes with these critters. Huge cages, lights, etc...

I offered to let her set up her animals the day before she moved at my place, then she picked them up the day after the move. It's the least stressful for the critters I'd say, and gets them out of your way while you're moving furniture/etc. :) But, you'd need a friend who doesn't mind reptiles... lol!

So nice of your friend! ;)
I was hoping to avoid unsetting, setting up, unsetting again, and setting up again - too much added work on top of moving an entire apartment, all in the span of one or two or so days. (I am now REALLY hoping we can work something out with the prospective landlord and move in over a period of a few days prior to the first of the month!)

Usually when I move, I make sure to get a move in date before my final move out date. That gives time to actually move. Most places in the states offer prorates on rent for partial months as someone already mentioned.

Don't really have much to offer on the point at hand though, since everyone else already covered a lot of viable options. If I did have to spend a night in a motel, I'd just bring the reptiles with me. But most motels in the states (at least all the ones I've stayed in) wouldn't really know what you had with you, unless the cleaning lady narc'd ya out. But if it's just a single night, housekeeping wouldn't do their thing until after my check out.

PS, total dig the new profile pic.

Thanks Nythain!! (She was in shed during the photo but she's still growing like a weed! Over 300g now and just passed her 2nd birthday) :D

We actually applied for a place yesterday, and will find out later today if we get it *crosses fingers* There is a chance that we may be able to move in prior to the actual move-in date, which is September 1st; they are using the month of July to do work orders and fix/update the place, so if it is done before the end of the month we may be in luck!

Thank you everyone again for the suggestions. It has made me feel at ease.
