MTV has a series called THE REAL WORLD/ ROAD RULES CHALLENGE- BATTLE OF THE SEXES in which men and women from seasons past of these two reality shows come together to determine which sex is the strongest. Each week they have a different challenge, some are mental, some are physical, some are disgusting. Yesterday's challenge was called SNAKE PIT POKER...Each team member had to enter a large box that was FILLED with snakes. HUNDREDS of snakes...they had to search for poker chips. Each team had to find 175 chips to win the game...I was disturbed by this! Undoubtedly...some of these snakes were killed. These people had to step on them. A bunch of the players got bit and I'm glad! They deserved it. I think someone needs to do something about this, MTV has done this type of thing before. Another episode required each team to be in a pool (water temperature was below 50 degrees) filled with snakes. They had to stay to keep an object in their hands above the water and if they dropped it they were dq'd. I bet a bunch of those snakes were killed too. How do they get away with this? They don't show a lot of the footage, they cut the stuff they couldn't get away with out, I guess, but it needs to STOP. I am soooo anti-MTV to begin with, I have to be REAAAAAAALLY bored to watch it. I'm planning to email the producer of this show, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions let me know.

PS- Some of the snakes were corns, I'm sure, really beautiful ones too. :(

These MTV people are a bunch of @ssh0les :mad: If it were cute kittens or puppies the public would be horrified. But snakes? No, they feel less pain when dying and their lives are worth less. Disgusting.
 
I saw a similar thing on an edition of Fear Factor and they used all corn snakes. Although they did take much "care" in not showing anything that appeared to hurt the snakes. As they lay in a coffin-like box filled with the snakes, the contestants had to dig through the snakes and find the white snows and put them in a separate box.
 
It just bothers me how much people demonize creatures such as snakes, scorpions and tarantulas just because they are not cute and furry as if basing theor hatred on the fact that their not cuteand that they aren't real animals with the same needs as a dog or a cat. I think the media just perpetuates that these creatures are bloodsucking, murderous creatures out to eat someone's children that gives people the inclination to abuse said snakes in such a vicious cruel way. And yet nobody has made a fuss about all the obvious abuse of these animals.
 
amen. what a load of bull- it's sick that people get so upset over fuzzy lab animals being abused or eating meat or believing only humans matter, because it's fine when it's a snake just because they are cold and creepy. I think any animal suffering is worth the energy to help, not just smart or cute ones. if anyone comes up with a petition, please post... ~jessi
 
This type of thing definately pisses me off, too. I'm already an MTV hater but this is just.. ridiculous. Funny how all those animal cruelty laws don't seem to apply to the silthery or crawly variety.

I wonder what'd happen if we got a whole forum of people to write to the producers, though. Would they even care? I mean, we're of a small group of people with our opinions comparitively. (unfortunately)
 
It's all because of that damn bible and the whole snake=evil thing. If only people stopped with their slimy snake image and got back to the true, more fluffy reality!
 
the truth is...

kittens or puppies wouldn't intimidate the players on either the male or female team. because snakes have such a bad reputation they make for good challenges on these crappy reality tv shows...i'm just glad that a bunch of the competitors got tagged, i hope it hurt reaaaaal bad. i hope they cried and suffered.

did anyone ever see the original FRIDAY THE 13th? ofcourse some of y'all did, it's a classic...you know the scene where the girl finds the snake in the cabin and the guys all rush in and one of them chops off its head with a machete? it looks damn real for a crappy horror flick...the way the snake keeps wriggling for a second...think an animal was harmed during the making of that film? considering it was a snake should we be surprised?

norbert, I remember thinking the exact same thing.."it can't be real, can it?". I would like to think wherever they got the snake from its owner/breeder would have ensured no harm came to it.

Re MTV, a petition is a good idea jessi - does anyone know if there one started already?
