I picked this guy up as a creamsicle. I'm not sure if it really is or not as I'm new to corns. I am also confused about what a creamsicle is? a hybrid of a corn and rat? doesn't really matter as he's only a pet but its nice to know what I have.

I also forgot to ask if there is anyway to tell his age? he's around 13" thanks:)

Cool looking snake! Looks like a creamsicle to me, but what do I know...

I think creamsicles are hybrids of amel corns and Emory rat snakes (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, there's no way really to tell how old he is unless the guy you got him from can tell you when he hatched. He's definitely an '06 though.

At that size... Very likely born around the end of July or sometime in Augusat.. Providing it is growing normally and getting fed on a regular basis.. But not always the case! If you bought it from a breeder they can tell you how old it is, or at least they should be able to.. :shrugs:

Creamsicles...

I have some of the crosses but no creamsicles myself.. Looks to be a nice pretty amel though..

It came from a local pet store where all it was offed for food was crickets. I talked them down $20 in price, it ate as soon as I offed a pinkie. It was at the pet store for 1-2 weeks.

being a newbie I have no idea what a amel or emory means LOL, but I'm trying to learn.

they were offering it crickets? ther is a thread on here somewhere about a corn who died, as the pet shop said they fed it crickets, glad you knew to feed it a pinky though ;)

Yah, crickets. There is another small snake at the same place too, they didn't even know what kind it was when I asked. I'm going back monday to by some more pinkies, I'll talk to them about feeding it properly then, hopefully they will listen but I doubt it. It's a horrible place:(

I hate buying animals from that place. I've watched them bring in snakes over the last year but had managed not to buy any until I saw that little orange corn, even then it was 2 weeks and a spure of the moment decision before I got him.
I know I should never go into that place with money but its the only store around that sells tarantulas.
As soon as I find a different outlet for pinkies I'm boycotting it. I just wish they would get shut down, I could tell you horror storie about it.

well..........this thread has both good and bad. obviously the good is you and your first snake. a very nice one at that. kathy loves book along with some other rat/corn snake books will give you some pics and examples of the most common type of snakes out there. plus they will help you with genetics (they don't help me any, but i must be some type of freak). also, please check out the link in my signature to help you with some common questions.
the bad is obviously the pet store..........most of them (especially the chain ones) suck. not to say all of them do, but it does depend on the management and how much they watch thier employess and "know" the product. and yeah, crickets might be good in the wild, but we are not in the wild no more with the snakes we generally buy. it is nice to see that it ate a pinky right off the bat for you, that means you will not have to try different methods to "switch 'em" over. congrats again and please keep us updated. welcome to the site/obsession and please tell us when you buy your others. :grin01:

Just a suggestion.. If you can pick up Kathy Love's book for a reference for yourself.. Here is a link http://www.corn-utopia.com/ .. Use it.. This site has many things to offer, and there are numerous questions you might have already answered here.. Just look around and search the resource you have found here..

The place I got her at isn't even technically a pet store, its a feed store and the owner doesn't care about the animals he sells. The reptiles have no heat/UVB, 3 ft iguana in a 55 gallon tank, tropical geckos and frogs with no moisture. Filthy fish tanks and bird cages. A tiger and money in too small of cages, the list gos on and on. They have had numerous police reports but nothing has been done about the terrible conditions.
I've had confrontation's with employees that would get me kicked out of other places but these guys just don't care.

In reguards on getting him food, look for herp shows in your area. I just went to my first one and it was so cool. The guy I got my pinks from sat there with me and picked out the perfect sized ones for my steve. I refuse to go back to the petstore for pinkys after the last time I went and was made fun of for looking through all their little packets of pinkys for the right sized ones. I got kicked out when i told her that yes snakes eat pinkys and yes there is a size requirement and the ball pythons are gonna die cause they dont eat crickets. Luckly though, there is a small town petshop near by that only sells live pinks but the guy really knows his stuff and will not hesitate to answer any questions.

The closest reptile show is in seattle and thats over 600 miles away. This is one reason I didn't get a baby corn sooner, it can be touch or go on finding food.

To give you an idea what your snake will look like in a few years, this is my adult creamsicle male, Lucius. The adult coloration looks a lot like the old creamsicle icecreams, which is where the name comes from.
