My rat is bleeding!

Freaky!
I have rats since a couple of days and I notice tonight that one of my female is bleeding! She is bleeding from her vagina. Is it normal? Could she just have her periods? Could she had a miscarriage (sp)? I put her in a cage all by herself because she does not seem to go very well. She is about 3months old.

What should I do?

Leave her alone. There is not really anything you can do if something is wrong. HOWEVER~ It's possible there is nothing wrong. She may be giving birth to her first litter. Yes~ blood is involved. Sometimes more of it than you would expect. IF she is giving birth~ your bothering her is more likely to cause a problem.

I know it's difficult~ but put a towel over the cage, put the cage in a quiet spot and leave her alone until tomarow morning. If she is still in distress then you may have to consider putting her down~ but RIGHT NOW the best you can do is let her be and leave her alone.

I hope you have a litter of pinks in the morning.

I just went to see her quietly and she is sleeping so I will do as you said.

I agree with JM, just leave her alone for a while and see how it goes. The age sounds right for a pregnancy and the blood from giving birth.

Most rats don't show themselves as being pregnant until 3-5 days right before it happens. I can't believe how well they hide it compared to mice.

I've had some females that look like there's been a blood-bath involved with birthing, some some hardly any. It seems the first few litters are the bloodiest and they progressively are less messy as the female knows how to react and keep herself clean during it.

As Lock said, most other female mammals do not have a periodic shedding of the uterus as we human females have come to dread. Lucky us!
 
Could also be post-mating blood. Some of my rats used to bleed during and after mating, sometimes lost what looked like a lot of blood.
