Perfectly normal. They feel threatened when you first approach them, and until they're used to you they give you the "Go away!" rattle. Once you've picked them up and they realise they're safe, they calm right down.

Cute all the same. They're like, "Ah'm tha fiercest thing EVAH!!!"

aww i thought i was special lol
i guess its also becouse i spend alot of time with him and hes gain my trust so for my first snake i think im doing preey good =) but is it normal for it to sleep whe i hold him?

It's hard to tell if a snake actually falls asleep on you - most of the time they're just chillin'. Some hatchlings enjoy curling up in your hands or where ever it's comfy and enjoy the warmth. It means they trust your touch and your smell enough to relax a bit.
Even after they get used to you and trust you enough, they will sometimes rattle and seem fierce. This is just a normal snake thing. :]

Yeah... a few of mine still do this... especially when their mouths are full of fuzzy and they get disturbed when I feed their snake-room mates. LOL.

My worst tail rattler? My LTR. She rattles and STILL bites!!!

About a week after I first read this thread, I noticed Samson quickly flick his tail (tip) back and forth against my arm. I've only just started being consistent in handling him and so I was still being a bit antsy myself. It soon took my mind off being antsy. Made me giggle that a behavior I was 'surprised' to read about was something he would do too. Guess it warrants spending more time with them to experience all the behaviors.

On that note, had him out last saturday and letting him slither around the lounge floor with me right behind him, I saw him sidle alongside a framed wedding pic that I had brought into the lounge to hang (moving room) and he got right up alongside it and sure enough raised his tail and pooped all over the carpet and onto the picture frame.

He seemed quite pleased with himself. I just shook my head because I'd read a post a week earlier about a guy whose snake pooped on the carpet.

live and learn I see.

One of my males rattles his tail when he gets aggitated. If I startle him or spook him, he rattles until he knows it's me. Then he stops. It could be a sign that your snake is in a bad mood or was startled, or maybe you just have a nervous snake who needs reassuring. Maybe try handling him/her more often so he/she gets used to your smells. If you think it's cute, then don't worry about changing anything. With mine, it's not so cute, because after he rattles, he curls up and gets ready to strike at whoever or whatever enters his enclosure (sticking a hand into his cage). I use wooden tongs to touch my snake lightly when he acts this way, and he turns and slithers away. From there I can pick him up and he calms right down.
