My Western Hognose Bite experience.

People are always asking what happens when bit by a western hognose and if they are venomous. Only a couple of people have reported being bit and the effects of it.

Tuesday (7/11), I was doing my normal feeding routine and I normally just pick the snake up out of the feeding container after it has ate its meal. I was feeding my largest hognose and went to wash my hands to get the mouse smell off my hand to put it back into its tub. Well, that didn't help. I went to grab it and it turned and latched onto my pinkie. It was definately a feeding response as it did not let go. I walked into the bathroom and stuck my hand and the snake under the sink with running cold water. It was trying to work its way around my finger to swallow it. The water began to get pretty darn cold and the snake unlatched mouth. I then pinched it behind the head and worked the bottom teeth out of my finger. Wow, do those rear fangs hurt! It seemed to chew on me for a few minutes before I could get it off, working the fangs into my finger.

5:42pm - Got the snake off my finger, and put her back into her tub. I was bleeding very bad from the two fang punctures. I , then, took two Benadryl and flushed the bite out with cold water.

This picture was taken right after I flushed the bite out.

5:57pm - My pinky began to swell and the swelling is working its way into my pinky knuckle.

6:22pm - Swelling is working its way into my knuckles. My ring finger is now swollen. My hand began to itch very bad, mostly around the bite.

6:32pm - My knuckles are now swollen.

6:50pm - Swelling is now going into my lower hand. Thumb, Index, and middle finger are not completely swollen.

7:40pm - Swelling has slowed down alot, but the rest of my fingers and thumb are becoming swollen.

11:57pm - Hand is completely swollen

Day 2 (7/12) - Swelling has worked its way into my forearm. I am going to the doctor to see if they can give me something for swelling and so I do not get an infection. I was given an antibiotic shot and a steriod shot in the hip to help fight the swelling. Doctor prescribed me an oral antibiotic. The doctor was concerned that I may end up getting Compartment Syndrome.

Evening of Day 2 - Swelling seems to be reducing very slowly, but has reduced enough I can move my fingers again.

Day 3 (7/13) - Swelling has went down noticeably, I am now able to use my hand although it is still swollen some. I now have some redness on my hand. It is slowly improving.

It seems that in a day or two my hand will be back to normal. I will keep you all updated.

Not that i think you are lying, but i think i have herd this exact story before and seen the pictures a few month back, so i am not too sure if it is happening right now.:shrugs:

It is...i've seen the other thread, heard all about it...this is a different story.
The other guy aggrivated the snake, getting it to strike, and let it chew on him for a while...just to see what would happen.

And btw...there was really no need to post that. you could simply have ignored the thread.... :shrugs:

I, have also read 2 articles that people have wrote about getting bit by their western hognose. If it were any other snake, I would have not even posted it, but it seems that the western hognose "venom" is a hot topic, so I thought I would add my experience to it. Have you not been taught that if you dont have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all? lol

Very intersting results.

About compartment syndrome. Isn't that when the doc wants to do faciotomy(not sure that is how it is spelled)? A little :-offtopic but if a doc ever wants to do a faciotomy for a venomous bite, 99% of the time it is a bad idea. More damage is done from the actual surgery than would have been done from the pressure. If a doctor ever told me he wanted to do one, I would tell him that I would rather eat glass.

Yeah, I told him that I really didn't think it was needed and he just told me to keep an eye on the bloodflow to my fingers by pressing down on my nails to see if I could see the blood come back to the area afterwards. This was an urgent care place and not my actual doctor so I really didnt take any of his advice, I just wanted some medication to keep it from getting infected. lol

I really want to thank you for posting this thread. I have been considering getting a hog for awhile now, but was in doubt because of the questions about them being venemous...mostly because of my 4 year old son and his little fingers. Now I can make an educated decision because you shared your experience...

Wow. Thanks for posting this here. It's nice to see what happens in a real situation bite, rather than someone letting a Hoggie chew on them, like in the other thing I have seen. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Thank you for posting this thread, hopefully it will educate the up and coming hoggie buyers.

I have found my hoggie is only agressive when food is around, especially after he has eaten. Therefore i leave him in a tub with his food.

And so the chewing reputation thing is true... eeek :sidestep:
I have terrible reactions to stings and bites, god only knows how much i would swell up! LOL

Well, I woke up this morning and I majority of the swelling is gone. I can now make a fist with the hand but I can still feel some tightness from the remaining swelling in my knuckles. I think I would still be swollen up pretty bad if I didn't go get the steroid shot.

This particular female has become a very aggressive eater and I found it the hard way. From now on, its straight from the feeding tub to their containers, no touching in between. lol

This is interesting. Thanks for sharing. Will keep me from getting one till my kids are old enough to know not to play with one.

Thas how it is with my little male. Once they are established eaters, they can become very agressive when food is around.

No touchy inbetween ;)

Heh, I don't want people to think they are BAD snakes to have as pets. They are great snakes. I have 9 western hognoses that are very calm and seem to love to be handled, but when the food is around they seem to go into a "feeding frenzy". Only 4 of mine are aggressive eaters. After this happened though, I will probably be treating all of my snakes this way after feeding. I don't mind getting tagged occasionally by a flat out mean snake, but a feeding response where they keep chewing is definately NO fun.
