NARBC Anaheim - First Expo!

Hi! :) I'm pretty sure I'm going to NARBC in Anaheim is weekend. I'm mostly going because I hear you can get mice there for way cheaper than the 3 packs I get at Petco. :p As usual, I have questions! XD

I only have one snake, a hatchling. Last time I weighed him he was 10 grams, and he's maybe a foot long. I don't know how old he is. I want to buy in bulk but I have no idea how many to buy. How long will he stay on Pinkies? Should I buy the next size up too? How long can I keep them in the freezer? I've heard a lot of veried answers. I know vaccume is the best way to store so if I buy a bunch I'll vaccume seal the ones I won't use for awhile. Are there any rodent suppliers that go to shows that you would not recommend? And how long before a pinkie goes bad if I leave it on my counter to thaw? I've been leaving them out to thaw but I don't want to make Lorenzo sick if I forget I have a mouse out.

Thanks! :)

Hi Gemini! Great to see a post of yours! Enjoy the show! It can be fun and over whelming. The one I went to last month had quite a few teens and preteens there, so you could make some reptile friends your own age. Have fun, take pictures and post back with your experiences please.

How often are you feeding Lorenzo? And how many pinkies? With that information, some of the experienced people here can guide better than I.

If you get too many, they can get freezer burn, so you need to plan it out.

Also, try thawing them out in hot tap water. I keep a disposable plastic cup, drop my pinkies into it, fill with out tap water. If you are only thawing one, I think it would be thawed out in 10 mins. easy.

Layne labs has always had good frozen and live at the show. If your snake eats a pinkie evrey 7 days that is 4 a month Depending on the enclosure you have him in and how fast he grows 6 month supply wont get freezer burn if you have it sealed. Some 2012s I have are almost as big as a few 2011s I have some snakes grow real quick and some are just slow growers. Also another factor to buying mice at a show is price if you get 25 pinkies for $0.50 cents each thats $12.50 plus $12.00 to get in $10.00 to park so u just payed $34.50 for 25 pinkies which comes out to $1.38 a pinky. So if your going just to save money it might be cheaper from a pet store. But I love going to the shows to BS with the reptile community and check out great snakes. Good Luck and enjoy the show alot of good guys from here are going to be there.

Yeah I feed him one pinkie every 7 days. I've had him for a month and he's still 10 grams, that's what he was when I weighed him after the first or second feeding. I know the savings isn't that great but I get to have fun at the show too. :p

Taxman's math is right. Still, going for the experience is worth it. Are any of the breeders or members from here going? I think it would be fun to meet them, if they are going.

Consider the cost of getting in entertainment cost, like a movie.

Yup, we will be there..
Layne labs will be there too, you can buy pinks and small fuzzies
and they come in ziploc baggies so all is easy to take out
what you need and store the rest.

Cool! :) I have another question. In another thread of mine, I don't remember which one, I read something about getting in on other breeders mice orders. I get what they're saying, find someone who lives near me who has a ton of snakes, and add on mice I need whenever they order so there's no shipping. But how do I go about doing this? I'm not the most social person IRL and I don't want to be rude or do anything that's generally in bad taste. :/ Any tips? :p

Hmmm

I want to go so I maybe there and bringing some adult corns
Fires whiteouts and maybe others

Narbc

I will be attending the show Saturday and will have some snakes on a table with Dustin and Gene if you want anything and dont want to pay shipping let me know either way stop by to say hello!

Gemini, you need to find the breeders, or keepers who do orders and see if you can tag along with their order, or buy from them.

There is a guy here in town who has one snake and needs adults for it. I only have hoppers, but offered to sell them to him at my cost (I averaged the cost of shipping per feeder) and he said great. I got them to him and he paid me later that day. He told me the hoppers were as large as the adults he was buying at Petco for a lot more money and he paid me more than I asked for them, but still way less than what he would pay at Petco. Now, he is just going to get them from me when he needs them. I don't have any problem with that as providing him enough for one snake, really doesn't make a dent in my supply.

So find that person near you, get acquainted and see if you can buy from them for cost. No one should be offended with you asking and if they are, you probably don't want to deal with them anyway. They may say no, but you need to ask.

Sorry for this being so long and sounding preachy.

Ok. :) So basically I just need to talk to people and find someone who lives nearby, which shouldn't be too hard with the show so close to my house. :p

Nah it's neither long nor preachy don't worry. :p I may be new to snakes but not the Internet; some people's posts are LONG. Like over a page if you were to copy it into Microsoft Word long. >_> It's especially bad when it's all one paragraph with no breaks in the lines. >_<

It went alright. :) I loved window shopping and wishing I could get another snake. XD And I got 20 pinkies from Layne Labs along with a new water bowl that I like much better than the one I had in his viv originally. It was a really tall bowl, he only drank a little bit of it before I had to dump it all out and refill it. Plus it was probably harder to lay in it, having to focus on staying afloat in the deep dish. And it looked like a normal pet dish, like a small water bowl for a dog, not a reptile. I got a cool black and white rock dish that's more his size. I'm having to fill it daily now but I prefer that to wasting water. :p

I wasn't as social as I wanted to be though. :( The problem was it seemed to be purely lizards, turtles and BPs. Very few corns. And that was going to be my conversation starter. :p I'm gonna look for a breeder in my area to share mice orders with somewhere less busy. :/

I'm sorry there wasn't many snakes there Gemini. I wish you could have been at the one in Wilsonville Oregon last month. Lots of tables of corns. Lots of kids, teens, tweens, men, women - just lots of fun. Best of luck finding a breeder near you.

Oh don't worry, there was still plenty to see! :) Just not corns. XD There were kids there too, but they were all younger kids getting cute baby turtles or beardies . :p I did see Bill Love there though! I talked with him a little.

Did you stop by the guys table from here? They had lots of corns. It was a real good show my daughter loved the frogs. Also how many mice are you looking for? I have a real good breeder that I get from in monrovia. If you want pm me and when I pick some up I can get them for you he charges $0.65 any size he used to be $0.50 but he went up still alot cheaper then most. You could pick them up from La Habra I go to my office there every few weeks. Its on Harbor and La Habra blvd.

I honestly had no idea who was who. :p I might look into that, I'll let you know. Thanks for the offer. :)

We had corns from wee hatchlings to monster adults..
and came home with most of them.. Normals - many morphs..
And we had Stephen there on Sat too, with even more Corns..
