Hi everyone, I have a few of questions...

First, my friend gave me his old water dish that he was using for his ball python and it is really big. Can I use this for my baby corn? A baby corn won't drown right? Anyway it is big enough for a hatchling to fit in no problem, I figure if he/she wants to swim she can swim, if not just drink?
PLEASE ADVISE! (I don't have the snake yet but getting one later today)


Second, should I get live feeders or frozen? Both are easy to get where I live.
Third, How often should I feed him?
fourth, how do I feed him?
Fifth, how long after I buy him should I wait before I feed him?
PLEASE ADVISE!


Lastly, any advice on how to buy a healthy and happy corn?

The water bowl should be of a good size for the snake to fit into..but you might not want to go to big since your snake might be a baby..I would say just get a medium one for now and save the other one for when he gets older..

Frozen feeders is the best choice (warming them up in hot water in order to feed them to the snake)..Since your snake might be a baby I would say go with pinkies for now..

If it is a baby you'll want to feed him one pinkie once every 5 to 6 days..do a search on here for the "Munson Plan"..many of us go by that weighing and feeding table and it works out really well..for that though you will need a gram scale to weigh your snake..you can buy one pretty cheap at a wal-mart or other convenience store or do a search on ebay for an affordable gram scale..

Make sure to put your snake in a seperate enclosure when feeding..(No substrate at all on the bottom to help prevent injestion and also this helps him learn your hand going into his tank doesn't always mean "food"...You can feed him by holding the pinkie by the tail and letting him take it, drop it in front of him, or if he needs to be enticed..get a pair of feeding tongs (like 2 dollars at petco)..and do the "Play live dance" with the pinkie to interest the snake..

Ask the guy when the last time the snake was fed...Best time to wait is at least 3 days..I waited 5 for mine..and then after the first feeding I waited 5 days before I attempted to first handle my snake...good luck to you :0)

Buying a healthy corn can be tricky..but it's all about looking at what your getting..check his eyes to make sure their clear..along with the nose..check the body to make sure no left over shed skin is still on the body and also check closely for possible mites..check the living conditions and see what the snake has been living in..Also watch the activeness of the snake..if it appears way to calm and tranquil it could possibly be sick..You'll want an active healthy bright looking baby corn :0)
 
Read the sticky on top of each forum. Starting with Husbandry and Basic Care forum.
If you don't have the snake yet I suggest doing some research yourself first.
But to answer some questions.
Clean the bowel and it should be fine.
A baby corn (hatchling) will need frozen pinks for now. I suggest them.
Feed in a small separate container, the size of a hide. in a dark area. with out the gang watching . They like to eat in peace.
Give the snake a 4-7 day to settle in be for handling and attempting to feed.
Do some more research here.

I have a 55 gallon tank, which I am going to lose my snake in if there is substrate, so I have decided just to use paper towels or newspaper until he is older/longer. Should I still move my snake to feed him?

Your snake will get use to eatting f/t and won't be hurt eatting larger mice defending itself. You don't have to going out and get a live one every feeding day.

The tank you can split in have for not with cardbord or something and use three or more hide so the hatchling feels secure. At a year old you cat open it up. to 55.
And yes feed in a seprate container. one without bedding.
 
Ok so that's cool. so even if there is no bedding in the 55 I should still take him out and put him in a seperate feeding tank?
 
No. His Viv /home should have bedding. The feeding container has none.
For a new owner I suggest using a feeding tub or such. This reduces the change of eating substrate and...gets you into the routine of checking the snake out for issues. And while the snake in the feeding tub, you can clean out the viv and change water etc etc.

Now... I shouldn't say this but ... do the breeders do this if they are feeding 80 -800 corns, Chances are no. But they have more experience and can risk it.

Do you want to drive to Hamburg PA again to replace the snake??
 
A 55 is way too big for a baby corn (if you get a baby). Make sure you have a ton of good hides for it to hide in an proper temps. You risk stressing the baby out in such a large tank. If you want, just get a plastic rubbermaid shoebox and drill holes in it for an enclosure. You will need an under tank heater and some way to regulate it like a thermostat. Otherwise, the Under tank heater will get hot an burn your snake. If you use a substrate like aspen, yes, they will burrow, and no, you will not see them during the day unless they are stressed or thermoregulating. You need to feed in a separate container to avoid ingestion of substrate. You do not handle after feeding for two days.

Also, a top on a tank does not work to keep corns in. You must have a locking lid, or it will get out, as unlikely as that may seem to you. I had a friend who even had a locking lid on her tank, but the corn was small and squeezed out the mesh lid somehow. They escape VERY easily and are not so easy to find again.

Please read the stickies and caresheets and buy Kathy Love's Corn Snake Manual, which you can get from her site www.cornutopia.com.

You need to do some major research before you buy this animal and make sure you can provide it with proper care or you will end up paying major vet bills.
 
As far as I am aware for proper husbandry of corns, yes, hiding places are essential. I am sure now you are going to reply that no, they are not essential. I will not reply any further to this post, as I do not want to argue basic husbandry techniques.

I am sure corns can thrive in many environments depending on the snake's temperament. I am just stating basic known husbandry practices that work.

That's exactly right. All of my keeper hatchlings are in gladware sandwich containers with just a water dish and do just fine.

I understand that there are common practices out there, but they are not 100% and many, many other things work.

The corn is going to be fine in a 55 gallon. I highly doubt it's going to need 15 hides to thrive.
