need AMBER male in Ohio

ForkedTung

Serpent Mound Monk
Hi, I used to keep snakes with great luck, healthy and happy corns and boas about 15 yrs. ago and decided to get one again. I purchased the amber female from www.amazonpets.com ( she's probably still showing on that site if you want to see her) and the only reason I bought from them is that you had positive reccomendations for them on this site. I will get her this Tues:.I would like to try to breed her this year for two reasons: I want to see if I can do it and to use it as a learning experience for my 6 yr. old son, who loves and respects snakes; I would like to also keep just one and sell or trade the rest very reasonably. I don't know the protocol for breeding but was told that breeders don't "share", Is there anyone who would accept a "stud-fee" or part of the hatchlings in lieu of myself buying another male. Also if I can't find someone with an Amber then just this one time that I want to breed I would do it with a "normal". Also where is the BEST place to get some frozen hoppers online? thanks,KH

Congrats on getting back into corns! I'm not entirely certain, but I think it might be a little late in the season to breed - though it really depends on the snake. Most females are dropping their second clutches about now or still recovering from the first.

I do know there are quite a few breeders out there who enter into breeding loans - but it just depends on their personal preferences. You may want to think about finding a yearling amber male (or caramel het hypo) that you can raise so that you can breed her next year for sure if it turns out she's not prepared to breed this late in the year.

I'm sure one of the more experienced breeders will confirm this or tell me I'm smoking some good stuff... lol... Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Jenn

I can't seem to get to the link, but a few questions. How old is this snake, weight...? I know there are people with a lot more knowledge on breeding than me, but agree with Jenn. susan

wrong web adress

Sorry the site www.amazonreptiles.com. Thanks for the replies and support. I don't know the specs. about her now but will soon, she is 3.5 ft. and the site says ready to breed in 08' does that mean to hibernate her this year?thanks,KH

Still no expert on breeding, but sub-adult would mean to me she is not up to weight and/or too young. Snakes brumate and some breeders do and some don't, both with success. If this were my snake I would wait until next year to breed, especially with the stress of shipping and settling in...susan

Thanks, Susan... I will most probably take your advice, I'm not in a hurry to breed but I thought it would be interesting at the least, again to anyone interested NEXT YEAR, please contact me. I do not want to become a breeder, I've read up on it and know that it is a delicate and invlolved process, that being said I just want to try it ONCE... I am not interested in AT ALL with becoming competition, thanks, again, KH

I agree with susan, if it says ready to breed in 08, breed in 08. It's just safer. It's possible that she is up to weight, or almost up to weight and they are still saying this, but it's safe to wait one more year.

I brumate my snakes, but as said, not everyone does.

As for online stores, I thinkfrom what I've heard, The Mouse Factory is the best by far. here's the link: http://www.themousefactory.com/

Congrats on the new snake!

My husband and I have purchased a few different snakes from Amazon (they are within driving distance of where we live) and they have all been healthy snakes and have thrived from day one. I find the staff very helpful and knowledgeable too.

As for brumation, it is not required, but it is recommended by many long time breeders. it is believed the cooling period helps set the snake's internal clock and promotes high fertility. And, even if you do pick up a male amber to breed with her next year, you don't have to breed them every year after that. You can just breed them the one year - just be prepared for possible double clutches or retained sperm during the following year.

If you would still rather do a breeding loan, then I'd suggest hanging out here on the forums over the next several months and getting to know some of your fellow breeders and keepers and getting yourself known to them in return. Then, around November start asking about getting together for a breeding loan - that's when more breeders are thinking of the coming season where as right now we are focused more on the coming pippings then what we will be doing next year.
