ok i just got a detigal term that has a indoors and out doors temp on it (hot and cool side for what i'm useing it for). i i found out that both sides are like 74F and i was wondering if i should do something, cause i don't know if thats to cold or what. a book i got really doesn't say it only gives temp for breeding. i got a day light and a night light i keep the day light on for 6 hours a day (for noon to 6 at night) should i get a heating pad or what please help.

hi

Where are you putting the probes? (the thingie the temp is taken with) I am sure yours has one on a wire from the term. itself and the other is located inside the therm.

You should place any temp reading device on the floor of your cornsnakes cage and get a temp reading there. One side needs to be 80-85 and the other can be room temp.

I agree with Bmm the temp needed for good digestion is around 85F you need to get this temp inorder for your corns to fully digest their food!... how big is your VIV? and what kind of light are you using how many watts? and so on... I usually just keep a heat pad for my corns the heat lamp seems to difficult to use (you have to turn on and off... and so on) the heat pad is good because they (the corns) when they need to digest they will lay over the top of the heat mats... I let them determine what is good and what is wrong!

i have a 20gl long and tall. also the prong things are like a inch from the bark stuff. i'm not sure what watt of a bulb. my tank hangs over a little on both sides and has a lip that i could use to put a pad but i'm not to sure of the air flow under neath there.

A heating pad is a really good idea because it offers a spot for the animal to lay on if feeling the need to warm up, and helps digestion A LOT. It should cover no more than 1/3 of the tank and that should do very good on keeping the surface temps hotter. The therm. may not pick up on it because its coming through the substrate but the animal will. If your not feeling enough heat coming from it, thin the substrate above it and vissa versa if its too hott.

1 side note: Stick a pebbel or something under the cage where the wire would stick out of the heating pad. This gives a chance for air to regulate down there, preventing a chance of fires a little bit and doesn't really throw the tank out of wack.
