hi,

i have had my corn snake for about 6 months now. he is still in the Viv that he came in ( a good size ) but should hopefully be moving into an even bigger one this weekend.

yesterday disaster struck. i walked into the room with my snake in to see he was distressed. i looked through the glass to see he had his tale in a small hole keeping heater to ceiling of Viv. i immediately opened the Viv supporting the snake and trying to stop him from wriggling which was only making the situation worst. when i got his tail out i saw that he had "crushed" a few scales towards the end of his tail. (well past his vent) i handled him a few minutes after that just to give him a check over and once i had decided everything was okay he went back in his Viv.

today i lifted the newspaper up to check on him to see if he was okay. when he saw me he rattled his tail. i have heard a lot of write ups about this problem and it is due to them being scared. he has never done this before in the 6 months i have owned him and he has not done it for the previous owner that had him for roughly 8 or 9 years.

i think that this is because of what happened yesterday and he has lost trust in me because i had to help him out.

i really do not want the accident yesterday that was just a freak accident to affect his confidence in being held.

if anybody could help me with ideas of how to get him to trust me again without stressing him out i would be very grateful.

his tail is fine and does not seem to be causing any discomfort to him but i will still check on him every day until i am 100% about it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

lee

thanks

I'd give him a day or two to relax from the injury, then handle as normal. He may correct the crushed scales at his next, or the next few, shed.

I agree. What he felt was a safe enviroment turned into something that didnt feel so safe to him and I am sure he didnt understand what was going on. He just needs to settle for a few days and should be fine.

I would just let him be for a few days. Don't worry about the tail rattling. My hypo just did this to me yesterday for the second time since I got him last year. It was only because I was taking him out for a photo shoot for a second time that day. I think I was stressing him out too much so I left him alone. Good luck with him though! glad to hear he wasn't hurt.
