I hit a young black racer with my van the other day, it nearly killed me too, I was so sad. It came onto the road so freaking fast that there was no way to avoid hitting the poor baby. :(

Almost ran over one the other day myself. Same type situation. It was
on the side of the road near the grass line, and there were a bunch of
dead sticks laying all along that same stretch. I got about 50 yards of
where this thing was, and I saw one of the sticks suddenly turn and
crawl toward the middle of the road !! . . .fortunately there was no
traffic on that road, and I was able to move over to the opposite
lane and avoid turning it into a Ribbon Snake !

Looks like a racer. The coachwhips around here in Aiken are light creme with darkening as they go down the body. Not a uniform coloration like that. The head is racer and the size is too. I've never seen a pine snake here that looks like that. The are a keeled scale species and this snake's scales appear to be smooth...racer....
