I've never built anything before but with this coming paycheck, I'll finally be able to build a rack system. I have an idea of what I want, but if you guys could help make sure that I have this right, I'd really appreciate it. I'm getting pre-laminated shelves from home depot. I have 51 snakes currently I believe (must recount!). Here are some particulars on what I want:

*Rack for current snakes with a few open slots for more
*Ideally, racks that are short enough that I won't need a ladder to check on all snakes
*Not have to use lids on tubs
*Peg board in the back

I have the following tub sizes in use (I think):

41qt: 15
28qt: 12
12qt: 5
6qt: 20

Based on what I want, I will need two racks for 41qts of 10 each. The rest is a little fuzzy because I'm not sure what size boards I need, or what would work best.

These are the measurements I got, but I did them really fast, so I'm supplying the model numbers too.

41 qt (1860): 34 3/4 x 16 1/2 x 6
28 qt (1846): 24 3/4 x 17 1/2 x 6
12 qt (1843): 17 1/2 x 12 1/2 x 5 3/4
6 qt (1851): 14 3/4 x 8 1/2 x 5

Unfortunately, I don't think it's wide enough. Am I right on this? If so, what is the minimum size board you would do? Any and all help is appreciated!
 
I'm not sure how going lidless works with the rack, but...

First, measure again. Measuring once is a bad idea. Measuring once fast is a really bad idea ;). There's a reason the saying goes "measure twice, cut once".

You may want to do a google search on DIY shelving... it sounds like what you want is basically an oddly proportioned shelf unit. Depending on how you do it you may be able to use the same rack for your 41's and 28's, but the 12's and 6's will require a different shelf spacing.

It may be worth looking to see if there are some 18" wide shelves, as the ones you linked are only 12" wide, so you'd have to double them up, and you'd end up with shelves 6" deeper than you really need for the 41's and 28's.

Hopefully someone who actually knows something about snakes will speak up, but if not I'll see if I can dig up some shelving plans later.
