Hi, I got my new corn hatchling bout a week ago. I have done research and the
motley i bought has fed f/t just fine and has never tried to strike during handling. However i was using paper towels as a substrate but i am using some kin of woodchips. I asked the petstore of what kind of wood these were made and he didnt know. I havent noticed any ill effects however should i continue to use it.
regards William.

It would be best if you knew what kind they are as some wood chippings become acidic when damp, don't panic though - your snake isnt in immediate danger! Where did you get the wood chippings from and have you still got the packet? If the person at the pet store advised them for reptiles they should be ok.... but then again not all people selling snakes actually have a clue how to look after them.

I agree with Beanie, some substrates can be very harmful to snakes (Cedar for example) I would defer back to towels until you know for sure what type of wood it is. Hope this helps.

I believe I knew more about keeping corns than this petstore guy even though its my first snake. The wrapping was just plain plastic, I will probably go back to paper towels. The chippings dont have that pine like smell though. I ll try to upload a few pics of the snake. Here you cant get all the supplies u can get abroad. Ill try ebay. thx. :)

what about getting aspen bedding for the snake to burrow in?

Although it's widely available in the US, aspen is less easy to get hold of in the UK so it may not be available in Malta. I'm guessing the range of available supplies there will be very limited.

It'd be nice to know for sure about the wood chips, but if they don't smell of pine/resin, then they're probably OK. If you put a layer in an inch or so deep, then a Corn will still be able to burrow in them.

Its true supplies are limited to a few shops here and that means that they arent cheap. About the subtrate a friend of my cousin has been using it for 3 years so... Here he/she is. Currently i am not using any heater the temps are bet 27C at night and up to 30C so i certainally dont need any heating now. :)
thx

What a lovely snake. The substrate looks like wood chip. If it is thats fine, I use that with 2 of my snakes. Aspen is great for corns but not so available.
