New eggs and no clue

Hello all, I'm kinda new to the snake thing. I've only had my albinos for about six months. Well, to my surprise, i noticed five eggs under the water bowl. It's been a couple of days, do i still have a chance to save them? I was told by my local pet store that i had another year before all this happens, so i am quite unprepared for all this. Today I plan to take the eggs from the cage and put them in a container with some damp vermiculite. Is this correct? Will I need an incubator? Can i make one? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Chris

BTW, nice forum!

Chris,

The eggs must remain moist-if the eggs are sunken in and hard or dry, there is not much hope for them. Under normal circustances the female would lay them in a nest box. I prefer sphagnum moss for my nest boxes, however vermiculite works very well also. A incubator is not always needed, but a temp around 85 degrees is optimal. Temperature can play an important role in the length of incubation. Watch out for temps over 90 degrees and below 70degrees. Try and stay between 82-88. ok I'm rambling-just got up --No Java yet.

Best of Luck!

The eggs might be bad no matter what? Did you or the previous owner breed it?

Well a few months ago, i saw the two intertwined in the cage and I kinda figured what they were up to. But the petstore I got them from said they weren't old enough to be doing this. I guess i beleived him because he said he knows the person who locally breeds them. Welp, call me a sucker, hehe.

I did put the eggs inside a bowl and cover them top to bottom with damp papertowels. They were all stuck together. The lid snaps tight and I put it underneath a sun lamp as a temporary solution. Unafortunatley, the eggs were kinda hard and sunken in. I'm assuming this is a bad thing. Is there anything else I can do but wait? Thanks again, Chris

make sure the bowl has lots of airholes. An some times you can hold them up to the light and see if their blood is moving in their. ;)

Chris,
This is one of the reasons I house all my corns seperetly, just because the snake is to small to breed dosen't mean that it can't happen. The eggs going bad is not the worse thing that can happen. Females that are to small to breed are candidates for dystocia(egg-binding). This can be fatal. Please understand I'm not critizing you or how you choose to house your snakes. I'm just offering knowledge. I hope you do well with your new eggs.

Best of Luck!

I don't think anyone else said this, but assuming the eggs are still good, you don't want to change their orientation at all. That is, the eggs need to be kept in the same position in which you found them (The top always needs to be the top). If your eggs are all stuck together, this shouldn't be too tough to accomplish, but you still need to be careful. Unlike bird eggs, reptile eggs are kept static throughout their incubation period.

Good luck -- Darin

Thanks again, I guess I'll just play the waiting game and see what happens with them. I did keep them exactly as i found them when i put them in the bowl. Also checked them and they seem a little more hydrated. The shells are kinda squishy now. Again, thanks. Chris

congrats
