So it's been a wonderful fall up here in New Hampshire. We've been lucky with some warmer temps these past few days, and coupled with the rain it's really attracted some great local herps.
1st up is a Spotted Salamander that I found a few days ago on the hottest and driest day of the week. I found him by our shed under some old pieces of wood. I was very excited, because I've only found one other Spotted Salamander in what seems like forever, and that one was just a baby. Once I found him under the wood, I ran back into the house to find a temporary enclosure for him, came back out and scooped him up with some moist dirt on my hands. I set him up with some moist moss that I found behind the house and kept him for a couple of days. I released him yesterday while it was dreary and rainy.
Then, after all of the excitement of finding a Spotted Salamander, I thought I'd test my luck today. I went around flipping logs, boards, rocks... you name it (of course leaving them exactly how they were when I flipped them). I didn't have much luck with that, which I attribute to how sunny and warm it was, but as I was walking through the yard I found this baby Garter Snake.
Wish that this photo had come out clearer. It was so hard to get him to pose on the Oak Leaf.
As I was about to take some photos of the baby, I glanced at something at the edge of the woods that caught my eye. I noticed that it was an adult Garter Snake with a large frog for a meal in it's mouth. I ran the Garter into the house (into a temporary enclosure to photograph later) and jetted back out to get some photos of the eating snake. As I knelt down to see the Garter feeding, I noticed that it was trying to consume a gorgeous adult Grey Tree Frog. I felt horrible to happen across the frog while it was still alive, but I couldn't and wouldn't do anything about it, it was just nature. And as badly as I felt, I was still fairly excited to actually be able to capture the moment on camera. I'm sure that it's not an all-too-common sight.
Hope you all enjoyed! And please, I don't mean to upset anyone with the photos. I just wanted to share an unusual wildlife encounter. Trust me, I would have much rather come across a Tree Frog sitting peacefully on the side of a tree.
