Hello all! My husband and I are planning on getting our first snakes at a reptile show next month, and I was hoping someone here could give me an idea of how much money to bring to the show? We have two tanks ready to be set up, but we haven't been able to find typical prices on corn snakes anywhere.....I would like to find a striped one, and my husband is interested in one with black or grey colors...so, if anyone can give me any pointers, that would be wonderful!! Thanks!!!
 
Hello and welcome. It has been my experience that the more money you take to a show the morre you spend lol. The snakes you speak of depending upon the morph that goes with it will vary in pricing. Low end could be $20 and high end could be a couple hundred bucks. Best of luck and please post pics when you get your new snakes.
 
Welcome to the forums. Depending on the show, you can probably get baby corns pretty cheap:

$15 Normal / Classic
$15 Amelanistic
$15 Anery (black & gray)
$30 Normal Stripe
$35 Butter
$40 Lavender

You can spend a whole lot more of course if you want to get real fancy. If they're your first you might be perfectly happy with any of them. Good luck, post some pics when you get them (or ask any questions you have).
 
Pricing varies a lot in snakes. It all depends what snake you choose. The better "quality/color" the more they will cost.

When you look at snakes, you need to remember they will change colors drastically from what you see (assuming you buy a hatchling) now, vs when they mature. They can end up looking like a totally different snake.

Now when I purchase snakes, I go look online and see what it will look like grown, half the time, I don't like the color

Sounds like you might want an anery for your husband. They are cheap. I have one but he's not quite a year old, not sure just how he will turn out.

Hello, and welcome to the amazing world of cornsnake keeping! I would like to add one piece of advice however. Be careful who you buy your snakes from, and make sure they are healthy before you buy them. I try to get as much information on the snake I am buying as possible (age, morph, DOB, breeder's name, etc). I am extra careful myself, because my friend has also been burned by bad breeders. He bought 3 adult cali kings from our local reptile show, and one would not eat, one was overtly aggressive, and as for the last one, it had mouse bite scars on it's tail, and the breeder didn't even know it's morph!
 
Any advice for what to look for in a reputable breeder? Or red flags in general? We very much want to do this right!
 
There are a lot of great breeders on here if you don't mind ordering and shipping your animals. They are very knowledgable and will give you all the info that you want and more. Otherwise, you will want to ask several specific questions and the answers you get (or lack there of) will let you know whether they are good or not (most times).

Some questions:
DOB?
Is the snake a good eater?
Is the snake aggressive in nature?
What morph is it?
Breeder's name and supporting info?
Age?
What size/type of food have they been eating?
How are the snakes' bowel movements (I know this one seems odd but it could point to something else wrong)?
What are the snakes' genetics (this one is important if you plan on breeding and some morphs seem more prone to be stargazers ... I haven't experienced this yet so someone else will have to give you the info on it or you could google it ;))?
When was the last feeding?
When was the last shed?
Has there been any problems shedding?
Any problems with parasites (mites, etc)?

I have been out of the game (so to speak) for a little while so if I'm wrong on any thing or have left something out please correct me. ;)
 
Hello and Welcome! Everyone else covered the cost of the snake pretty well. The only other thing I would highly recommend bringing additional money to the show for feeders. I saved A LOT of money by buying at shows verses local pet shops.
 
Look online to see all of the booths. Then search the BOI to see the reputations of the people. :). I would set up the cage before you even leave honestly, and not buy the supplies at the show. Just set up the tank with substrate, and the UTH and buy all of the hides and other things at the show, including the mice!
 
I would buy here! Or check ads on Kingsnake.com - classifieds. Lots of people here have ads there. I've gotten all of my snakes except 2, from people here and they are all lovely.

And, if you can get 2 from the same breeder, you will save shipping.
