ok well i have my okatee corn for like a week now..not even.i already have a baby BP but i work in Petland and this thing came in and im just like I HAVE TO GET IT. LoL I dunno..i loved the colors and its so cute n small. Newho..that night i just brot it home (im 17 by the way) Like my mom HATED snakes but ever since i got that Ball shes been ok with them..now she just kin of worries about the space in my room but w/e. Ok...since i practically dunt noe much about them cuz i just abruptly got one heres a few questions.

1. its about 12 inches long...didnt exactly measure it but i have it in a 10 gallon for now and it was a little longer than the wdith of the tank which is 10 inches. Now...ive been feeding it one pinky every 5 dayss....is that good? and for how long shud i do that.

2. How old do u guys think it is at that length..im guessing like 2 months top cuz its so tiny. Im pretty sure i have a male...with corn snakes..which sex gets bigger?

sorry this is so long but i wud LOVE ur help.u guys seem so cool here...plus ne other info wud be appreciated ;)

It might be ready to move to fuzzies. Just feed it foods the size of its head, maybe slightly bigger. Every five days is good for a long while. I don't really know about the age, but you aren't far off at all. Females get bigger in both corns and BPs. Just out of curiosity, why do you suspect it is male?

If you wanted to look further into it and really educate yourself you could search for "cornsnake caresheet" and "ball python caresheet" at a search engine and read a couple of them. I say read a couple, because people will have varying opinions and ways of doing/caring for snakes.

Welcome to the site, I am Chris (as the sn might reveal haha). I'm 17 too, glad I could help, feel free to ask anything you need.

awww...lol...i know that females usualy get bigger with snakes but i heard sumwhere that with corns its opposite. I think hes a male..well actually im kinda positive cuz i *popped* him and well..yeah. But how large will a male get. Plus its still too small for fuzzies..the pinkies look huge for him but he takes them..lol Ummm...i have a question about heating though. For all my animals....(and i have many)...lol, wel i use lighting systems for them. like i know for the lizards thats perfect but for snakes im not sure...i have a lamp on one side of my corns 10 gallon tank and its with a clamp so its raised a lil to keep good temps. since its summer i dunt have to worry bout temp that much..i sumtimes ut the lite on during the day to get it up to around 88 or so...at nite theyre turned of to get to lower 80's. But im worried about the winter...cuz ive heard that under tank heaters are good. I work in Petland and we have the exo terra ones..but the dessert heater things..i saw online that theres rainforest heater ones too. Now exactly how warm do they get and how much wud i use them...during the day..at night...so on. And wud i also have to use lighting or would that be fne? O, n since its only on one side..the warm side is it ok for the other side to be cooler with no heating on it?

Heat lamps work fine, so do UTH. It's a matter of what your prefer.

~ but your corn snake will cook at those temps. He will be happiest with approx 80F hot side~ 75F cool side.

Your BP will like it a bit warmer than you have. He would like 90F hot side~ 80F cool side

You wouldn't need to use lighting with the UTH. Personally I like them better than lighting the cage, but I think it can be good for your herps to have a UV light, but not absolutely neccissary. So being that you popped it I take it you are already pretty well educated about snakes? The ball will max at 4... possibly 5 feet if its big.

lmao..guys i noe everything there is to know about balls..lol..mines a female thats almost a year now and trust me..ive had past experience..lol U guys rock..newho....Yeah with the corn i have a lite now and it rarely gets THAt hot..and wen it does i turn the ltie of...its usualy roudn 85. But umm....in the winter if i have a uth and the hot side is round 85 and the cool side is like the outside temp or w/e isnt dat bad.. i live in nyc and the winters are cold..lol..
Im just trying to get sum info so ya noe...but lighting wud be good if nethign rite? its eeasier for me that way cuz i can control it more..i heard that snakes dut liek lite so dats y im askin :)

Under Tank Heaters

The "mat"-type heaters last a real long time. Years. Light bulbs have to be replaced all the time. UTH use less electricity. Add up what you would pay just in replacing the light bulbs over five years time and compare that with an initial outlay for a UTH. The UTH, placed on one end of the enclosure, is always on and the heat from it is always available for the snake to choose. A light used for heat is going to need to be attached to a thermostat. It will be going on all times of the day and night. You can't have a light on at night. The snake needs night to be dark. Snakes need a place to hide to feel secure. If the only heat source is a light and the only option for "belly heat" is a rock under the light, the snake is forced to be out in the open to be warm.

I recommend the Cobra heat mats. They are a good bargain and a good choice because of the type of heat they provide. They can go inside or outside, on the floor, on the wall or on the top.

Well, I wasn't 100% sure so I checked a reliable source, The Cornsnake Manual, which says: "Males grow longer and heavier than females...Most corns over 4 1/2 (137cm) feet are in fact males..."

ok so basically this is my plan. rite now since its warm i dunt need to use anything for warmth. However , when it gets cold during the winter i will use a UTH for the warm side and sumtimes a lite on the other if it gets TOOOOO cold. I think that makes it all good rite? lol. But one last thing, i checked out those cobra heat mat things and it says it keeps it at a constan 100 degree temp which is way tooooo high. And u can only put a thin layer of substrate in the tank....what should i do? are the exo-terra ones better...any info bout the mats wud be great.....

But you can't figure out how to stop cooking your corn snake by turning down your heat source?
