New Member looking for advice.

Hi All, I am not yet an owner, since I am still in the research mode. I am trying to gain as much knowledge possible before making a commitment to one of these beautiful creatures. I have been doing a lot of homework but would now like a little advice please, two items: 1. As a first time owner, is there any advantage to owning one variety over another (health, size , aggression, ect.)? 2. Does anybody know of a reputable breeder in the Chicagoland area? I'm from McHenry, Illinois, located far northwest suburbs of the city. Thanks again, this looks like a great site.

As for corn snakes, All corn snakes are all the same practically. I highly recommend Kathy Loves Cornsnake Manual from her own website. Cornutopia.com
I know there are a few local breeders around here in the Chicago area but I can think of any at this moment.
If you are really interested in this and recommend also joining your local herp society.

Its always a good place to start and to learn about different herps from local clubs. And I also hear Chicago does have regular shows as well.

I can't help you with Chicagoland, but a number of breeders on this board have websites and will ship, such as http://www.cornutopia.com/ which is Kathy Love's site. Kathy's extremely generous with her knowledge if you email her for advice. She is also the author of the fabulous CORN SNAKE MANUAL which is *the* book on keeping corn snakes.

Don Soderberg of South Mountain Corn Snakes also has a website (http://www.cornsnakes.net) and fantastic book, CORN SNAKES IN CAPTIVITY.

And Philippe De Vosjoli's ART OF KEEPING SNAKES is also very good.

You can probably find them in your local chain pet (or book) store if you want to browse through them before buying them.

ETA:
Younger snakes may be more fiesty than older snakes, but I really haven't noticed any differences in temperment between the different morphs.
