Hello, I have been a lurker here for a few weeks now, doing research to prepare for my first corn (an early xmas present from my gf) I have had Horza for nearly 5 weeks now, he is a male (apparently) Bloodred. I have set up my viv based on information found on this site, he has a hot hide and a cold hide and temps are controlled by a thermostat and tested with a digital probe. He has some things to climb on if he chooses, and seems to be happy and active each evening. He was left to settle for a good week after arrival and seems to be pretty chilled with being handled. He is so far feeding well and is a pretty top striker (I was bricking it a tad before first couple of feeds, being a lurker here has made me a paranoid dad already!) but all has gone well. Even the second feed where he decided to eat rear first and took a looong time to get the mouse down, although stressful for me, was fine for him. He went very quiet about 12 days ago but from all my reading on here I realised he was most likely in blue and left him be as much as possible. Sure enough I got home from work yesterday and he had left me a perfect shed, eyecaps and tail tip all present, I was so proud! Since then he has been cruising loads. Ok, apologies for the huge post, but have a question regarding my boys age. The store told me he was a year old, but he is pretty long (3 feet plus) so I wanted some opinions as to his age, as I believe he might be a bit older. I have attempted to post a couple of (poor) pics, maybe these will help. Will post some better pics once I have them.

Ok maybe pics will work this time...

Hello and welcome to the forum. Nice looking bloodred you have - age is hard to determine sometimes by length and size due to feeding schedule during growth - some breeders may only have their collection on a maintenance diet (depends on how much and how often the snake was fed) - we have a 2 year old going on 3 who eats every week (we got him from a reputable breeder that only fed once a week and he is only 100g and less than 3 feet).

Hello Buzzard, and thanks for the welcome!

Yeah I figured it was pretty hard to be sure sometimes, just thought he was so long he had to be older. As he didn't come from a breeder but a pet shop they couldn't tell me much except he is eating a large mouse weekly. The reason I was wondering is that I might like to breed him in the future (already a little addicted, but gonna wait a year to get plenty experience of snake ownership before I get a second snake) and I wanted to be sure he was of a good age to do so. I figure it will be at least 2 years till I was to consider a breeding project anyway so I guess that would guarantee he was at least 3 anyway!
