new racks I picked up

these racks are some cool %#%@s racks. I plugged four of them into a Ranco and the thing is incredible. I liked it so much I am switching my hatchlings over to their racks as well. Thanks

Very Nice

How much did you pay fo the rack (includin heatng, containers, ect.)???
How many corns can it hold???

Cheers
Alex

they are pretty expensive but super nice and effeciant. Each rack holds 15 containers. I bought 4 racks to house 60 yearlings. If you go to boaphile website it has everything you need to know. I think the four racks and the ranco thermostat was about $2000.00 Thanks

wow
I like them very much.

But to be I think that they're a bit expensive
I think that I have seen these before. And I think that they're great.

I envy you so much~

first with all those great snakes you have
then with the opal motley
now with these new racks!!!!!

When can I move in with you??

ouch - not cheap - but very, very nice.

I just got two animal plastics racks that can hold 14 15qt. tubs or 7 32qt. tubs each. So far I am very happy with them.

Where did you get your plastic racks, Skye?

come in over Simon, I'll throw out the Mrs. and we'll have a killer snake breeding singles pad, complete with Booze and women. LOL. I keep some odd hours and have a mean streak but that should'nt be a problem. JUST KIDDING BABE!!!!!!!!!!(disclaimer)

Mike,
I think you'll do well with those racks! I've found it's much easier to care for your projects when you have the proper equipment.
I'm still struggling along with a 'make do' setup here. I guess it's up to me now to put any money I make off of these guys back into the project. I've about topped out as far as money out of pocket goes here, I'll either earn enough to expand or earn enough to reduce ;)
Ideally, I'd like to expand my shed and connect it to my work shop. Seems every time I think I've got enough racks, more snakes appear from somewhere! I guess I'd better do some more thinning.................

isnt that the truth

the more room, the more snakes. I have been using these homemade wood racks for years now and they are really getting on my nerves. I became tired of them so I have been changing my room over to the newer plastic racks. That sweater box rack I posted is outstanding in that they place the heat tape in between two pieces of plastic and glue them together so you never even see it and the way the heat conducts so evenly makes it really nice. They are by far the best I have used. I like them so much I sold all of my hatchlings(snake shack) racks and I am purchasing their hatchling version of the same racks. Its worth the money like you said for the ease of it all. Happy breeding.

i think thats not the way to keep snakes, if you like them, i think you should give them space and dont put tham away in a drawer..

i know a lot of people are going to respond and stuff, dont please, this is just my opinion...

Not having multiple snakes, I agree.

However, when you have that many snakes, it is unrealistic to have that many glass aquariums or vison-style cages. Personally, I don't think I'll ever have more than a few snakes, so I can still keep an aquarium for each, but that is my preference.

Well, everyone is entitled to an opinion. And you can't expect us not to respond when you've stated your opinion openly.

It's OK to disagree but you can't keep hundreds of snakes without some type of organization and ease of care.

Corn snakes are simple creatures and do not need what most people think they need. Food, water and a place to hide will just about cover the snakes needs.

If you are going to use the argument that they need more space and it's unnatural to keep them confined in a small space, then how much space is acceptable? Maybe they shouldn't be kept at all in the other extreme.

Like I said, it's OK to have differing opinons but to each his own. When you try to push standards of opinon on others, it seems a bit opressive.

By the way, I do think your opinion has merit.

then, if you have too many snakes to have glass vivariums for them, have not, that many...:)

whats the use of having 40 snakes in plastic drawers, in just the place you arent able to see them anyway!
The reason why i keep snakes, is that i find them amazing creatures in there behaviour and looks.

i dont think there is much to notice about that when they live in a dark drawer of 30 x 20 cm...

I keep mine for other reasons then just to look at. I like to breed them and hatch eggs. I like to work with different genetics and try to develope different looks.

I understand why you feel the way you do, but you weren't suggesting change my style to reflect yours were you? I see no reason other then personal preferance here. If you have reasons why I shouldn't keep snakes in drawers (other then you don't like it) please share them with us.

P.S. My drawers are not all that dark. I can see the snakes quite plainly. Besides, they can watch TV through the clear plastic!

ahh the old argument...

Convenience vs. Aesthetics

I had all my corns + other species in nice ‘vivarium’ style enclosures prior to deciding on a move. Well, I acted preemptively and switched all my snakes over to Sterile containers for ease of moving when the time comes. Our future home construction is taking much longer than anticipated so I now have all of my animals in these plastic containers. At first I was not too happy BUT now I love it. It really is much easier to clean and monitor any unusual behavior. I still spend the same amount of time with my corns I did before. Now I can actually enjoy more time with them b/c I spend less time cleaning them.

The only thing that I don’t really like about racks is the fact that they’re connected & are simply one big unit. It would be all too easy for something to spread throughout your entire collection with this style setup. I would like to see something like Mike’s setup but instead have each ‘cubby hole’ in the rack act as its own unit that stacks on top of one another. This way you could play with its arrangement and fit them into odd spots in your home. Also, it would make it easier to afford by slowly building up a rack vs. spending $2K all at once. Plus, you could quickly separate and isolate any animal at anytime. I’m not taking about something like vision cages but instead individual separate rack sections that can still act as a rack. Only problem I guess would be heating. Oh well, just thinking out loud.

one more comment...

I wonder if it actually stresses the corns out more having them in extremely clear aquariums vs. somewhat cloudy-clear plastic since they are reclussive & private in nature. Maybe they don't want to really be seen?

An interesting point, however I think if you have a hide out or tow, and substrate that they can hide under, when they are out in the open it is by choice.

I have mine in a 10gal aquarium, with a UTH but I also have a light which adds a few degrees of heat, and mimics the sun giving day & night. Right after it clicks off, he comes out to play. You seem him play all over his vine and try to climb the glass, just moving around.
I am definetly NOT an expert by any means, and only have my 1st corn, but I think if they have the option of being hidden and mysterious, or out in the open, then they are out in the open because they want to be. Though I do keep my snake in my bedroom, so he is not in a high traffic area, so that might be another factor.
