Soooooo, it's been a little over a couple years or so and I'm still wondering how this system worked out for you. I can only assume at this point that the plastic didn't work out so well with the rodents. Good learning experience I'm sure.
ya, It probably didn't work. I had (what looks like) the exact same set up and had 3 big problems:
1) the rodent can jump out the back of the drawer when you're opening it (hubby put plexi-glass tops on to prevent this)
2) after plexi-glass tops were added, the moisture content became so high that the bedding was sopping every morning. (with many holes drilled all around for ventilation)
3) one of the babies managed to get thier teeth into the hole the water spout came through and 2 managed to escape.
That is when we finally gave up on this system and used the unit as storage drawers. We have a $10 ikea shelf with a lrg cage on top (kijiji $20 +male rat and supplies) for our colony cage and individual wire mesh cages on the shelves below (wire was free from hubby's work) for brood cages.
