New snake behavior

On Sunday, we brought back a young male anery and set him up in a 10 gallon tank. Our plan was to leave him be for 4 days until he gets used to the place. Yesterday, he was out of his hide and my son went to the tank to look at him.

The snake began striking the glass and flipping out before going back to his hide.

I understand that my son shouldn't have put his face up to the tank. I guess my question is...is this behavior normal for a new snake and what should I do? Scheduled feeding is on Thursday.

Thanks.

Yeah... I think it normal. Striking the glass is a tad strange but I wouldn't worry about it. Your son might of scared the #%ap out of him. hehe.

Good Luck

Normal for a startled snake.

I had a pretty big bullsnake once, in a glas viv. My daughter startled him, and he struck at the glass so suddenly and visciously she started crying!

Yea, seems fine

Yea, seems fine. Far as I'm concerned new tank like that with clear glass that hasn't gotten any water or residue on it from humidity or wipings, heck snake may not even know its there unless it puts its nose up to it. Might of been thinking it was getting to close and just bluffing at her. I wouldn't worry about it. Least your on the right track as far as letting it get accustommed to the new surroundings. Soon you'll start handling and I'm sure this type of behavior will seem like a thing of the past. Good luck with the new snake.

Thanks for the consistent replies. I guess a clear tank is a huge change for an animal that's spent all of his life in a plastic tub with a solid top (typical breeder setup). When we got him, he was very well behaved and even docile, as were all of JM's snakes she showed us. I think it's just the new environment, and like you guys said...him being possibly startled.

The waiting game continues! Hope he eats well on Thursday. Then 2 more days to rest.

Let me add my "perfectly normal" in here too. He's ok. Your son just startled him is all. Remember, they are prey animals as well as preditors. He didn't know that your son had no intentions of eating him!

Well, good news! Inspite of being startled and freaking out, he ate like a champ yesterday! Defrosted and warmed up a pinkie...then I took the screen off the tank, waved the pinkie in front of his hide which got his attention (poked his head out). I left the pinkie on a nearby rock and we left him alone. Within 30 minutes, it was gone! Whew...

I'll leave him alone for a few days and try to handle him on Sunday.
